Trouble restoring Outlook 2007 data RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm having trouble restoring Outlook 2007 data that I backed up with OneCare. This is on 64-bit Vista, and I'd appreciate your help.

The problem is that some files aren't being restored, and I don't know what to do to restore them. My efforts have brought back some old mail messages that were found in an archived .pst file, but none of my current activity, account definitions, or contacts have been restored.

All the details are below, but I'll try to summarize here:
After running restore, OneCare tells me that it is unable to restore these file types:
    1) MSMESSAGESTORE
    2) OEACCOUNT
    3) .eml Windows Mail messages
    4) .contact

The help message says to use Import and Export to bring in .pst files. But these aren't .pst files, and I can't find another set of options that will import them.

    Help, please.

    Thank you.

    ---------

    Blow-by-blow details:

At the beginning of the restore process, I tell OneCare that I want to restore "Outlook and Windows Mail Files."

The next screen lists 26 files of various types. I check the option to "Select all" and go to the next screen.

On the next screen, I've run it both ways. The option is to "Restore files with duplicate names to my OneCare restored files folder - C:\Users\Public\Documents\Restore\10-30-08" or "Do not restore files that have the same names as files on my computer."

On the next screen I choose to restore the files to the current account. Then I start the restore process.

At the end, I get a screen that says
"10 files were successfully restored to their original locations."
"18 files were restored to another location at C:\Users\Public\Documents\Restore\10-30-08." *
"5 files could not be restored." **
"23 e-mail files were copied to C:\Users\Public\Documents\Restore\10-30-2008. To use these files, you must import them into your e-mail program." Then there's a link to "How do import my restored e-mail?" ***

    * When I "view details" on those 18 files, 16 of them are duplicate files (I've run this restore process more than once?), and two of them say "alternate location" under "reason." (I don't understand "alternate location" in this context?)

** When I view details on those 5 files, they are .oeaccount files. The reason listed is "restore cancelled." What are those, are they important, and how can I restore them?

*** When I go to the folder where these 23 mail files were copied, it turns out that there are three different kinds of files--
    1) Some .pst files, which I am able to import. (Unfortunately, they're not the current .pst. They're old ones from a year ago.
    2) Some MSMESSAGESTORE files. How do I restore those?
    3) A bunch of OEACCOUNT files, which I can't get to restore using the "Import and Export" option because I can't figure out what settings will allow me to import them.
    4) Some .eml Windows Mail E-Mail Messages. I can't figure out the right settings to restore these via "Import and Export".
    5) Some .contact Contact files. I can't figure out the right settings to restore these via "Import and Export".

When I click on the suggested help, there are instructions on how to import .pst files. Nothing about the other file types.

  • Hi Matt,

Thanks for using our product and providing us feedback.

I will try to clarify some of your issues:

    1) Understanding the restore report:

    a) 18 files were restored to another location at C:\Users\Public.....

16 of them were restored with reason: 'duplicate'. This happens when OneCare tries to restore a file  to its original location finds that theres another copy of the same file.

2 file with the reason: alternate location.  This could have happened if the original location of these files is missing.

    b) 5 files could not be restored

Well, open the restore wizard again, and choose these particular files and try restoring them again.you could follow the instructions given by Jim

    2) Importing email files:

Windows Live One Care restores your email files but you have to import them depending on the file format using a relevant procedure.

Agreed that the help link given to import email files is only for .pst files. We will definitely consider updating the help content as to how to import other kinds of email files.

For  rest of these files, you can use the following instructions:

    .contact files:
    follow these steps:

1)Select Import and Export from the File menu.
2)Click on one of the Import action items to read a description of what that action is. You will probably choose either "Import from another program or file" or "Import Internet Mail and Addresses."
3)Cancel and add file converters from your Office CD or Microsoft's Web site if the description indicates that will be necessary. Install converters and return to the import process.
    4)Click Next.
5)Choose the file type you're importing, then click Next.
6)Click Contacts under "Select a destination folder," then click Next.
7)Review the actions and options in the Import list and make changes if desired.
    8)Click Finish.
9)Click the Contacts icon in the left-hand window to view your contacts. See if the import was successful
( this  information was taken from internet)

    Hope this will help.
