  • Question

  • I am no longer able to enter new deposits or withdrawals in Money, when I try I get "This transaction can not be entered" and below are two buttons to click, ok and send report.

I really hate the thought that it will not work in 2018 because I haven't found any other program that I like.  Please if anyone has any ideas let me know, I don't want to get to far behind in keeping track of my money.

  • Don't overwrite your only recent backup. Copy your most recent backup to other media.

Copy Sample.mny from your install folder (typically C:\Program
    Files\Microsoft Money Plus\ or
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money Plus\
with 64-bit Windows) to your Documents folder.  Open Money
by right-clicking that copy of sample.mny and choose Open.  Migrate
to the Portfolio.  Does it display?  If not, the problem is
    probably with your installation.

If Sample.mny works correctly, your installation is probably
OK. While in Sample.mny, go to Tools->Settings->ProgramSettings and set the

Was your symptom that Money would not open successfully?
While in Sample.mny, go to Tools->Settings->ProgramSettings and set the
Open the problem file a time two.  Does that file open now?  If so,
go to Tools->Settings->HomePageDisplaySettings and Remove the
Investment Performance module.  There has been a problem where a
lot of investments triggers a crash upon opening where Money opens
    to the "Home Page".

If Sample.mny does not open successfully, then there would be a problem
with your Money installation or your Windows settings.Install Money Plus
Deluxe Sunset with the link in what is currently the second (sticky)
post in this forum. Then put the patched DLL described in what is currently
the first post in this forum into place.

Make an extra copy of your backups onto other
media in case you want to restore one that pre-dates the problem.
You can switch back to your file by clicking File, and selecting
your regular file from the list at the bottom.

If Sample.mny does open successfully, you can  open your real Money file, and
    try   File->RepairMoneyFile->QuickFileRepair.  That is
simple, but it probably may not solve this.  Then  I would try
making a repaired version of your file with
    File->RepairMoneyFile->StandardFileRepair level 2

If it still does not work, try restoring a backup that pre-dates
the problem. Try your newest, or second-newest or even older backup.

Alternatively just start with your restoring your newest backup. If that does not work, restore
your second-newest or even older backup.

  • Also, please post back with the exact version number of your copy of Money. Inside Money, click Help / About.

You may need to replace your copy of mnyob99.dll due to known issues, or you may need to clean your bills (available in Money Plus Sunset).

  • I tried what you suggested, I was able to open the samply.mny file and add a transaction without the error, I than selected file open and opened my back up, when I tried to enter a transaction I got the same error.  The version I have is  PLEASE help me figure this out, I HATE quicken and can't find another program I like as much as MS Money, I have been using it since it first came out, as a senior citizen I don't handle change well and the thought of learning a new banking program makes me sick.

I tried the file repair and got an error that there was an error reading or writing the file.

  • The great news is that you are using Money Plus Sunset. That means that you have File->Repair->RemoveAllBillsData and by default, Money saves 4 vintages of upon-exit backup files, and 4 vintages of scheduled backups. I increase my number from the default of 4. The *.mbf backups incorporate time and date in the filename.

I send my scheduled backups to a USB flash drive.

You must do the patch as Bob said. That may or may not stop your problem, but you need it regardless.

What I think is going to work is to restore a backup that pre-dates your problem. Be careful to not overwrite your good backups by automatically backing up your corrupt file over your last good backup.

    In M+: Tools->Settings->BackupSettings
    I suggest checking
x Automatically backup my Money file every time I close Money
Save in [a place on your hard drive ]. It is best to Browse to
a location rather than typing the path.
x Ask me before backing up each time*
       x Compress Backup Files
Keep only the _20_most recent backup files [adjust to taste]

x Perform scheduled backups every _14_ days
Save in [a USB flash drive location or cloud, such as Microsoft OneDrive]
x Ask me before backing up each time*
       x Compress Backup Files
Keep only the _2_most recent backup files [adjust to taste]

Then periodically, perhaps each month or three, copy your latest
backup (uniquely named by Money) to a CDR or some other storage.

    * The reason I have Money ask me, is that I don't want to back up
each time I exit.  If I went into Money 5 times in a day, I would
not want to back up 5 times, nor would I want to delete 5 other
backup files.  You will be given the choice to BackUpNow or to

  • I have tried everything and I still get the error when I try to enter a transaction.  I can't find any backups that are working either.  I am so lost.

  • Have you replaced the mnyob99.dll as described in the first sticky post? https://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/d28d6921-1f01-430f-b33e-f5a3ec47077b/important-patch-for-money-plus-maybe-20062007-mnyob99dll?forum=money

The updated dll file is known to fix this specific error.

  • If I were in your position, I would treat this with more urgency and attention. I would have responded to Bob's post. It is very much to the point.

"I have tried everything". That is unlikely. Did you do the patch?

Above I should have said to save all of your *.mbf files to other media. It would be a real shame if you have continued to overwrite backups. I would set up Money to stop overwriting your backups as you exit Money, until you get things resolved.

Even if you do the patch, and you have no backups that that pre-date the problem, you still could try QIF backup and restore to a new file.

If you run the following command in a command window, it will search your computer for *.mbf files (it will take time):

     dir \*.mbf /s

Summary: Save what backups you have elsewhere. Do the patch. Stop making new backup files for now. If you don't resolve it soon, ask how to do the QIF Export and Import.
