MCSA 2008 or 2012 RRS feed

  • Question

  • OK folks...after years of working on Microsoft products I'm finally gonna take the plunge and make a real effort get some MS Certs. I was thinking of starting with the MCSA and going from there. The question is...would I be better off doing a 2008 or 2012 stream for my MCSA?

My gut tells me 2012 is the way to go even though there's little 2012 ou there 'in the wild' so to speak. That way I can move to MCSE: Cloud at a later date and my certs will probably be in demand within 12 months or so.

What the general opinions of you folks?

  • Given that you haven't completed any of the 2008 exams and they are retiring on 31 July 2013, I would recommend going down the 2012 path (unless of course you feel you could complete the 3 exams required for MCSA 2008 by them in which case I would recommend doing 2008 and teh upgrading to 2012 :-).  There's also the fact that a large majority of the population is still using 2008 and probably won;t move to 2012 for quite some time.

  • Hi.

I would suggest that you should go with 2008 first. Since you said that you are working with Microsoft for some time, I guess it won't be hard for you to pass three exams to get at least Server Administrator cert.

I am taking 70-648 upgrade path from 2003 to 2008 soon, it is not that tough as you may suspect :)

  • Thanks folks...I guess you're telling me what I kind of thought already. Given that I've not picked up my certs yet AND that realistically we're not likely to see much in the way of 2012 'in the wild' so to speak until the end of 2013 I think you're both right...2008 MCSA it is for me then.
