  • Question

  • Is it possible to take only 70-640 + 70-642 to earn the MCITP Server Administrator Certificate?

What is the difference when taking 70-649, which is a composite exam?

  • Exam 70-649 is an upgrade exam that is a composite of three (not two as mentioned above) stand-alone exams: Exams 70-640, 70-642, and 70-643 and consists of a subset of questions from these three exams i.e. you will complete less questions in the 70-649 than taking the three individual exams.

Exam 70-649 validates skills that relate to the core technology features and functionality of Windows Server 2008 R2 and builds upon the knowledge base of a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) on Windows Server 2003 whereas the three individual exams validate skills from the perspective that the candidate is not building on a 2003 knowledge base.

It is not possible to upgrade a 2003 certification to 2008 by sitting exams 70-640 and 70-642 alone

  • Unfortunately not :-).  If you want to do 640, 642 and 643, you will also need to do 70-647 plus one of the following:

    70-620 or 70-624 or 70-680 or 70-681

  • Hello Mr Wharty,

Thanks for your replay to this topic. I heave heard that the 70-649 is a very tough exam. Is it possible to take the composite exams 70-640, 70-642 and 70-643 as separate exams to split the work/learn load? and if I will do this, would I earn the MCTIP Administrator for 2008? or only by taking 70-649?

    Thanks,

    Dennis

  • On Dec 15, 2014 I passed test 70-646 with an 861. Previous in 2012 I took and passed 70-649 . As indicated above, I thought I would earn the MCITP: Server Administrator and it would be reflected on my Microsoft transcript. As of this writing and after mutiple emails and phone calls to MCP Help, they continue to tell me "We have been informed that your concern is being investigated by a higher line of Technical Support. Once we received an update, we will send you an e-mail notification as soon as possible." I have sent the supporting documentation showing that both 70-649 and 70-646 have not been retired and other websites showing the certification path you describe above to earn the MCITP: Server Administrator, After almost 2 months of waiting, they are apparently still "investigating". Do you have any suggestions?
