re-loading windows after a validation problem

  I recently bought a laptop that had XP Pro pre-installed. But when I loaded updates, I received a validation error message that led me to believen the pre-loaded software wasn't genuine. I have valid XP Home software that I'd like tried to load instead, but am not sure how to do it (I tried loading the valid softeware, but was prompted for the Service Pack 2 disc, which I don't have). What should I do? Also, do I need to remove the old XP Pro software before/after loading the new XP home software?
