HDD Spindown RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm  wondering if WHS (Vail) will spindown HDD. When you have +10 HDD in your server you can save money on the power bill. I have a licence for WHS v1 what i notice these drives did not ever spindown.

  • No, you can't control the contents of any given drive.

  • By default, no, your drives won't spin down with Vail either. Both V1 and Vail are based on Microsoft server operating systems, and by default those operating systems aren't configured with any thought to power savings.

While it's likely to be unsupported, you can certainly configure your server to spin drives down after a period of inactivity, though. However, you'll realize more power savings from replacing old, small HDDs with new, large ones. Going from ten to two or three spindles active 24x7 will save more power than spinning down ten drives when they're not active, because spinning those drives back up uses quite a bit of power, much more than if they're just idling.

  • Thanks Ken Warren for your fast reply.

When you rip your BLU-RAY movies and Compact Discs and store them on HDD you need a lot of space. I talk about 10 - 20TB of storage. So i use only 1TB and 2TB drives. In that case it is useful to spin down drives in my opinion. These drives are only necessary when playing music or watch a movie. It should be nice if i could make folders lets say disc 1 music and disc 2 movies. when not is use disc1 and 2 spin down. Only i think this is not possible with WHS. I'm right?

  • Hi, I am not sure if it will work probably. But you can maybe by-pass the WHS HDD setup.

I have a similar setup as you 10 HDD, 2 * 1TB used for system and normal storage pictures, documents etc. and 8 HDD with a totale of 14 TB only used for DVD/Blue ray movies.

Don't add the HDD using the WHS console, but as extra drives directly in Windows. Off cause no folder duplication this way, but who wants to duplicate 12 TBs of DVDs. Then set in Windows that HDDs can spin down after 1 hour.

I have then mounted them in a folder structure on the C drev, and on the D drive I made a share, again outside WHS console. In the share on the D drive I create links to the folders in the structure on C, I made a small program for this to build a nice ABC-folder structure.

It works for me in WHS v1.

Hope this gives you an idea how to move on. But I too would wish that MS would support people that are using WHS for a media server not only music but also movies.

  • Busted, you can probably do that (technically, at least), but if you do so you won't be able to use the management features in Vail (i.e. the Dashboard) to manage your shares, and you may also have some problems with including your shares in the libraries that clients running Windows 7 can use.

You might also be able to mount your additional drives (not added to server storage) directly to folders within a share, rather than going through C: as you did. Again, I can't say if you'll have problems with libraries, and you certainly won't have the same level of management you would with folders that actually exist in Vail shares, but it should work...
