Moving an opportunity to a different account

Question
-
We've encountered an odd situation in which numerous opportunities were created under the wrong account and need to moved to other exisiting accounts. Is there a anyway to do this without having to re-create each opportunity under the proper account?
Thanks in advance. Mike

About how many opportunity records are affected?
If only a few thousand - then I would use advanced find to search those opportunties and then via "Bulk Edit' (up 250 at a time) set it to the proper account.

Hi Mike,
You could create an on-demand workflow and run this on 250 records at a time. You could also temporarily place the potential customer back on the form.
How big is your problem? how many records? how many different potential customers are involved?

Hi,
You should simply be able to change the account within the 'Potential Customer' lookup field on the opportunity form. Unless you've customised it and removed that?

Sorry Frank, bumped into you there! :-)
Another option (if using CRM2011) is to use Excel and the Import tool to update the records but you must ensure the account name matches exactly to that of the new parent account.

Unfortunately, as you asked, the Potential Customer field was removed when the system was customized. I don't kow the reasoning... but it's not there. Any other ideas? Worse case, we can use the Excel option once we move to 2011.

OK, thanks.. I will look at both options. If I want to try the adding the 'potetnial customer' back on the form, where do I find the removed field? When I look under attributes for opportunities, I do not see such a field. I'm dealing with somewhere between 1500-1750 records. thanks again.

It is a lookup type field and you should be able to see it in the list of attributes associated with the entity. If you don't find it, is it possible that someone deleted it from the system? You can export the Opportunity by rolling the Opportunity entity into a Solution then once exported open the xml customization file and search for the field. I'm not looking at the Opportunity entity right now so I'm not sure if the system will allow you to delete that field.

The name of the field you're looking for is 'customerid'. it may have had its display name changed to somethng else so look in the 'name' column when searching NOT Display Name. It's a system required field so won't have been deleted.
