WHS trial and OEM Installation help with a new mobo/CPU RRS feed

  • Question

  • I used the search function...

    Just to clarify...

I'm running the trial version of WHS right now.

I ordered the OEM version from newegg. I also ordered a new mobo/CPU.

I want to preserve all my stored data.

From what I gather all I will have to do is the following:

1)Rebuild server with new mobo and CPU
2)Connect all HDDs, making sure the system drive is first
3)Insert OEM dvd, and boot from DVD
    4) choose WHS Reinstallation option
    5) Wait for the reinstallation to finish
    6)  When it's finished, I will have to install all the new drivers, but all my data should still be there?

I just want to make sure I do everything correctly to preserve all my data.

    Thanks for your help.

  • If a server installation is offered, your data will be preserved (besides user accounts and installed Add-Ins).
There are a few situations, in which server reinstallation is not offered.
    In this case try to:
    • run the SATA controller in IDE mode (at least if you have no luck with own SATA drivers - these are not included in WHS Setup DVD)
    • ensure, that the former primary drive is attached to the first controller on the mainboard and is detected as first disk
    • ensure, that the DVD drive is either attached to an IDE controller or to one of the first 4 SATA connectors (if your motherboard has more), USB may also work
    • ensure, that you read the menus carefully and not mix up new installation and reinstallation
