Internal and External Access to SE OCS Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • OK, so I know that this is going to be a silly question, but I have to ask. I ahve deployes OCS 2007 Standard Edition and works well internally. I have been asked to allow outside access to users without the need of the VPN client that we use. We are currently only using OCS for IM, Presence, and Live Meeting. Even though MS says it is not possible to allow remote access to OCS without deployed edge servers, I thought I would ask if it can be done with NAT and good firewall rules? Let the roasting begin....

  • There are several reasons why you would not do something like you want to do

The OCS EDGE Server provides security for your OCS implementation when you open up your environment for internet access.

Do not allow direct connections to your OCS Server except your EDGE Server(s)

Firewalls do not provide much security as they really don't know what traffic is flowing from the internet

I can only suggest to use an EDGE Server
