Access Denied for sub-folders RRS feed

  • Question

  • Good morning!

I recently installed a full version of WHS and have been having problems accessing some of the sub-folders on the server.  I have two PCs, both with FULL access to the Music folder (as verified by the Home Server Console.  My main computer has no problems access the folders and sub-folders.  However, my second computer cannot access some of these sub-folders.

I can access the 'Music' folder setup by WHS.  In that folder, I have 3 more folders:  CDs, eMusic, MP3.  I can view and enter the CD folder, yet eMusic and MP3 both give me the "...is not accessible.  Access is denied."  error message.

To complicate matters, eight  of the nine folders inside the CD folder are off limits.

This same problem persists with the other main folders:  Recorded TV, Videos, Photos, etc.

I have verified the User Account has 'Allow access to shared folders only' and has 'Full' access to 'Music', 'Photos', 'Recorded TV'
I have verified each of the shared folders have 'Full' access for this user.

I am at a loss as to why these sub-folders are denying me access for my second computer but not my main.

    Please help.  Thanks!

  • Actually, that would be the problem.  I have verified that those folders that do NOT have a security tab I cannot access.  Those that DO have a tab, I can access.  It is consistant among all the different folders & sub folders.
In that case, the the supported (and recommended) method for fixing would be to do a Server Reinstallation (that should correct the Security tabs for all of the folders).

The other option (which is unsupported and not recommended) that might work would be to logon to the server desktop and "force" the security settings from the main shared folders (i.e. Music, Videos, Photos, etc) down to all of the subfolders.

I've chosen option #3:  Recopying the folders using my main computer seems to have done the trick and added the security tab (and access) for my secondary computer.  Not sure why I didnt get them the first time but it seems to be working so far.

Thanks again for helping identify the problem.

  • On each PC are you using the same Username and Password?

  • No, each PC has it's own user name

  • Wasn't sure you had more than one account as you were using the singular 'User'.

If you right click on the folder, select properties and choose the security tab you should see it is marked as RO_  and RW_  from both machines - you will also see who is the creator.  You then need to use these details to double check that under the folder access on the Windows Home Server each user that is listed has Full Access/Read Access.

Note: There is no point changing permissions on the security tab as Windows Home Server will reset access permissions on a reboot.  If you have been changing them then a reboot should put them back to how Windows Home Server thinks it should be.

  • I'll start with some questions, because you haven't given us enough information to have a decent chance to determine the cause of your issue:
    • How and when were these folders created?
    • Have you rebooted the server or either client computer since they were created?
    • Logged off a client computer and back on?
    • Verified (per this FAQ) that both of your client computers are logged in with the user name you think they are?
That you have this issue on one computer but not the other suggests rather strongly that this is a client issue, not Al's assumed server issue.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

The main folders were, of course, created by WHS.  The sub folders were created by me and copied over from an external drive.

Yes, I have rebooted several times.

Yes, I have logged off and on several times.

Yes, I have verified as per the FAQ, I did that before posting.  Wouldnt the name mismatch keep me from accessing the main (Music, Recorded TV, etc) folder?

  • I have had the same problem on several occasions, but even on the parent directory (music, movies, etc).

I change user account privileges via the console to reflect what I want but access is denied even after a reboot of the server and client.

I was able to get it to work once, by deleting the user but keeping their folder, and then recreating with the rights I want them to have.

I just tried this again to resolve that problem again but this time it did not work...so here I am searching out a resolution...

the client I am having trouble with is windows 7, but I had the same issue with XP.  I dont' think it is OS specific, but something servers side...just a hunch.

I used my main computer, mounted the volumes and copied from the ext drive to the network drive.

Can you right click on one of the folders you can't access, click on Properties, then select the Security tab and post the settings shown here?

Actually, that would be the problem.  I have verified that those folders that do NOT have a security tab I cannot access.  Those that DO have a tab, I can access.  It is consistant among all the different folders & sub folders.
