microsoft equipt and one care from circut city RRS feed

  • Question

  • Could someone please suggest what we can use to replace the circut city onecare/microsoft equipt program.  This was discontinued when Circut city went out of business.  It included the firewall, anti-virus, and office word, excel, powerpoint and onenote.  Thanks

  • Actually, the end of Equipt and the demise of Circuit City are unrelated. Equipt was discontinued by Microsoft and all subscribers should have received a communication to that effect.
At this point, you can purchase Microsoft Office Student/Teacher edition for between $100 and $150 from most retailers. For protection, you can choose to purchase OneCare or you can use a free alternative - www.avast.com and www.avira.com both are free for home users and are decent antivirus programs. Note that your Windows firewall will be enabled when your remove OneCare.
Later this year you can install the new Microsoft Security Essentials for free if you wish and it will be the virus and spyware protection of OneCare for free. OneCare is also at end of life. If you purchase OneCare now, it will be fully supported through the end of the subscription, but you will be offered a transition to the free software before the end of your subscription.
