Server Backup Alert RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have just had an alert from my WHS 2011 (Vail) test server warning that the disk space for the server backup is low.

I can see how to manage the backups for client computers attached to the server and I fully understand the backup retention policy settings for client computers but it would appear that the policy does not extend to server backups and I can't see any facility to manually delete individual backups to free up space on the drive.

Can anyone advise where you can manage the server backups?

Is there any way of applying a backup retention policy to the server backups?

Will the server automatically overwrite older backups on the backup drive?

I have been actively monitoring how the server backup in WHS 2011 will act once the backup drive is full.

I have read many posts that warn there will be an error mesage, no old backups will be deleted etc.

Yesterday my server backup drive was down to 1.3GB of space and had a status of "Low free space"

I was doing a fair bit of video editing yesterday and created a considerable amount of additional data which was replicated on both my main PC and my WHS 2011 test rig.

I am pleased to report that when I checked my server this morning the available disk space on my server backup drive was reporting 6.8GB, all of my additional data had been succesfully backed up and four old backups from the begining of February had been deleted.

The server backup disk is still reporting "Low free space" but it would appear that the server is managing the drive space by removing older backups to create space for new ones.

This is good news as far as I am concerned albeit I would still be happier if I was able to implement a backup policy on the server backup drive that would allow certain critical backups to ne retained whilst allowing others to be sacrificed to provide additional space.

My current stats for my test rig are:

409GB of data stored,3 PC's backing up to server nightly, Server Backup disk 1TB drive currently providing 54 twice daily incremental backups.

If it isn't broken don't worry I'll soon have it in bits to see why!!!!!!!

  • I'm recieving the "Free space is low in Server Backup" warning, but I have moved the backups to a seperate 2TB drive that is reporting 657.2GB used and 1250.8GB Free Space.  Does the Server backup use the same disk as the Clients for its backup?  If not, where is it stored?  None of the drives on my server are anywhere near 50% full.  Any idea how to fix this inaccurate warning?
