Today when I started my 4-year-old eMachine (T5254) with Vista, the desktop background was black and there was a message saying Vista is not active and I have to enter an activation code. This computer came with Vista pre-installed. I have no activation
code.
"Windows Activation > Activate Windows now" just starts up SLUI.EXE, which gives me the same message as the one that appeared when I booted up today. It doesn't say anything about activation by phone. There's a "Contact eMachines" option, but clicking
on it doesn't give any information about contacting eMachines; it gives a link to support.microsoft.com, which only leads to the suggestion to click on "Windows Activation > Activate Windows now."
About 3 weeks ago I changed the motherboard to one of a different brand but very similar to the original. The original motherboard had started powering itself off suddenly. The new board is a Foxconn MCP61SM2MA-RS2H. The old one is an EliteGroup MCP61SM-GM.
I still have the old one in a box. Vista didn't complain for the first 3 weeks after the motherboard change, until today. The CPU and HDD are the same as when it came from eMachines, and everything else is original except for mouse and keyboard, which I replaced
as soon as I got it, and the DVD drive, which I replaced last year because the original one stopped working.
