Windows Xp on my IBM Thinkpad Fails activation RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

about an year ago i reinstalled my operating system on my portable pc using a "not-mine" copy of windows since the IBM recovery cds took so long to arrive.

About a month ago i discovered the possibility to solve the situation using the product key update tool, provided by windows update, to change my windows xp product key with the one on my laptop sticker. Now I reinstalled Windows XP, because of a Windows Internet Explorer 7 crash, with the same cd and I tried to do the same thing, but now the product update tool says that my product key is already been  used or is used at the moment.

What I have to do to, who I have to call to unlock my product key? I don't think I hava to buy another copy of Windows, right? Since if this is true, in my work I'll have to buy about an hundred copy of this product.

    This is the MGADiag output:

  • Hi r3N0oV4,

This is expected behavior for the Product Key Update tool and is By Design. The Update Tool was intended to switch out a Non-Genuine key for a Genuine key and this should only need to be done one time (per Genuine key). If you subsequently needed to reinstall windows, then the Genuine key should have been used to conduct that install.

    Thank you,
