WHS 2011 Unable To Make Client PC Backup Of Windows 8 RTM RRS feed

  • Question

  • Windows 7 clients backup fine. I'm not sure if this is caused by UEFI on the client machine or an issue with WHS 2011.

  • You can't back up a GPT partition on WHS2011. W8 clients back up fine after the recent UR3 update.

Microsoft state this in the WHS 2011 Release Notes.

  • Actually I have the latest UR3 update installed and it still wont backup the Windows 8 client.

  • WHS 2011 cannot handle UEFI, GPT, or dynamic disks.  But WHS 2011 can back up Windows 8 installed on a normal MBR disk of 2Tb or less just fine, absent some other issue.

If your machine does not use any of the incompatible technologies, you might check your client event logs to see if there are any errors related to shadow copies. If the shadow copy service cannot run successfully on your client, this could prevent backups from completing (independent of Windows 8).
