Not genuine after a year RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought this computer in August 2011 and everything has been running fine but for the last few weeks it has been telling me that my copy isn't genuine. I have the product key that's on the case of my computer but it's not letting me enter in anywhere and keeps trying to make me pay £80 for another key.

  • Click on Start
    in the Search box, type
    SERVICES.MSC
and hit the Enter key - accept the UAC prompt if you get one.
Look in the console for the Software Protection service, right-click on it and select Properties.
make sure that the Startup Type is set to Automatic (Delayed Start), and click Apply.

Try starting the service now - do you get an error message? Does it start? does it almost immediately stop again?
Post back with your results, and a new MGADiag report.

If it doesn't start, then please do the following...
Please open an Elevated (Administrator) Command Prompt window and use the following commands....

    net start sppsvc
    sc qc sppsvc
    sc queryex sppsvc
    sc qprivs sppsvc
    sc qsidtype sppsvc
    sc sdshow sppsvc

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Windows, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

  • There are three reasons (that I know of) to get that error when trying to start that Service.

    1) The file is missing
    or
    2) The registry entry that tells Windows where to find that file is malformed (or missing altogether).
    or
    3) the system had an Activation Exploit installed prior to being updated with SP1.

One other possibility is malware action – try using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (www.malwarebytes.org) free version. Download it, update it, and do a full system scan (do NOT enable the real-time protection trial – it may conflict with your existing AV or malware scanners)

Please run the following commands from an elevated COmmand Prompt window....

    DIR C:\Windows\System32\sppsvc.exe

    SFC /SCANFILE=C:\Windows\System32\sppsvc.exe

    DIR C:\Windows\System32\spp\tokens\pkeyconfig\pkeyconfig.xrm-ms
    DIR C:\Windows\SysWOW64\spp\tokens\pkeyconfig\pkeyconfig.xrm-ms

    SFC /SCANFILE=C:\Windows\System32\spp\tokens\pkeyconfig\pkeyconfig.xrm-ms
    SFC /SCANFILE=C:\Windows\SysWOW64\spp\tokens\pkeyconfig\pkeyconfig.xrm-ms

Post the results, and then reboot, and run another MGADiag report and post that.

  • I had the same problem with windows 7 ultimate recently. I activated it online and after sometime it said non genuine windows! Had to reinstall it.

  • Adriaan -

If you're having problems now, please start a NEW thread of your own, and detail them there - with an MGADiag report.

It is very rarely necessary to reinstall to cure a non-genuine problem, unless the problem is with a counterfeit installation - which this one does not appear to be.

I had problems sometime back. Im back on xp now because windows 7 does not support some of my hardware. My motherboard is custom build for Choas computers and that why im having trouble. But its not bothering me anymore. Thanks anyway

Those responses look OK - we'll have to go back to first principles for a minute...

Please run the following command from an elevated command prompt (I forgot it last time) and post the result....

    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\sppsvc.exe

Then run CHKDSK C: /R and SFC /SCANNOW

and reboot and post a new MGADiag report - please also check that the three files in my last response are not tagged as read-only in the WIndows Explorer file properties box.

There's no way a CHKDSK C: /R could have run in that short period, unless you have a very  small drive?

Did you answer yes to the confirmation, and reboot? -

  • You didn't reboot after the CHKDSK command - so it hasn't run yet.

  • Ok I've done the scan. What do I do now?
    Saturday, August 4, 2012 12:32 AM
  • Post another MGADiag report, and see if you can find the results of the scan in the Event Viewer and post them as well - they'll be in the Windows Application Logs, as a Wininit event (you can use the filters in Event Viewer to make it easier to find)

  • Is there actually a way to fix this? All this running around rebooting and stuff is really annoying me. Is there any way of knowing what's actually wrong?

  • You basically have three options.

    1) carry on here, and we chould be able to sort it -in fact I may have discovered a solution in the past week

    2) attempt a repair install of Windows - then reinstall all the updates - and hope that cures the problem

    3) Call MS WGA Support, and hope they can fix it.

There is also the 'nuclear option' of a reformat/reinstall.

OK - on to the potential cause fix I discovered this week....

It's possible that a pair of critical system files have been corrupted, or locked somehow.

Please reboot. Then open a Command Prompt window, and run the following command

    DIR C:\Windows\System32\7b*.* /AH

You should get two files as a result, with the same date and time stamp - what is it?

If the date/time is roughly the time of the reboot, then the problem is elsewhere

If the date/time is significantly different, please post the results to your reply.

  • It looks to me like they are probably corrupt - my copies (every system creates its own copies) are very much larger. It is however possible that there is something else causing the lack of update.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt

run the following command and post the results.

    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\7b*.*

This will hopefully show us if the files have been 'deliberately' locked for some reason - I just wish I knew what process updated them so I could check whether that's running properly, as well. The content isn't user-friendly, so I can't tell what a corrupted file would look like.

As you can tell, I am going very slow on this to avoid an further damage to your system!

  • There is a slight risk here that this will make things worse, rather than better - so the choice is yours as to whether to proceed or not.

Please run the following commands from an Elevated command prompt.

    MD C:\7bbackup ROBOCOPY  C:\Windows\System32  C:\7bbackup  7b*.* DEL C:\Windows\System32\7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-0.C7483456-A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0  /ah DEL C:\Windows\System32\7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-1.C7483456-A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0  /ah DEL C:\Windows\System32\7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-0.C7483456-A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0 /ar DEL C:\Windows\System32\7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-1.C7483456-A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0 /ar DEL C:\Windows\System32\7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-0.C7483456-A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0 /as DEL C:\Windows\System32\7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-1.C7483456-A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0 /as DEL C:\Windows\System32\7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-0.C7483456-A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0 DEL C:\Windows\System32\7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-1.C7483456-A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0 REN %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform\tokens.dat tokens.barx

    net start sppsvc

This creates a backup of the two files, then deletes them, then renames the tokens.dat file and and attempts to start the Software protection service.

The reason that there are 4 commands for each deletion is that I'd like to see which ones your files respond to - it may give me a clue as to what caused it.

You will get a message box up saying that an unauthorised change has been made to Windows - don't worry about it.

Please copy and paste the results in your reply. (assuimg you go ahead!)

Reboot, and you should be taken to either the activation or Key Change wizard - follow the instructions you are given - if you have to enter the COA Key, you may have to activate by phone.

If this does somehow go wrong what'll happen?

  • Nothing that can't be cured by a repair install :) - which is probably the next thing I'd try anyhow :(

  • ...and we're back to square one again. :(

One last thing to check before we have to go for the repair install.

Please run the following command from an Elevated Command Prompt window(1)

Copy and paste set of commands below into the window – once completed, hit the Enter Key to ensure that the last command has run (2)

    REG QUERY HKU

    REG QUERY HKU\S-1-5-20

    REG QUERY HKU\S-1-5-20\Environment

    REG QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-20"

Copy the whole output to your response(3)

  • I'm now officially out of ideas :(

The next option is a repair install - Assuming your machine has no proper disks you will need to download the ISO of Win7 with Service Pack 1 embedded.

You can download the SP1 Refresh for your language and edition from the links on these pages...

    http://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft

The links are for downloads from the official Digital River servers run for MS.

Create the disk from it, and check that it boots the system OK - but do NOT attempt to start the repair install from there, because it can't do it!

Then follow the instructions at http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?ltr=R for a repair install (please ignore the adverts!)

  • Will this make me lose data?
    Monday, August 13, 2012 3:22 PM
  • It shouldn't cause data loss - but as with any major system operation there is a risk, so back up all data to external media first.

  • The file size is 4.3gb On my internet that's going to take about 6 maybe 7 hours and how am I supposed to put that on a disc? The biggest discs I have are 700mb

  • It's a DVD not a CD :)

I make it 3.09GB, not 4.3 - which file are you planning on downloading?

English Home premium SP1 refresh is this one - http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-58997.iso

(what is your connection speed? - a 1Mb/s download capped line will take that long - anything better will take proportionally less time)

  • Yeah it is 3.1...No idea where 4.3 came from.

I think my connection is 2mb but i never get download speeds of more than 180~kb/s
