What’s the difference between a resource and a user in PWA. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I know there are two way in PWA to sync the AD group to the project server. But I am very confused what the deference is.

When I set sync the AD groups in sever settings-> Manager Group here, is the user here cannot be a resource default? And for this situation, the user won’t be appeared in the Resource Center? If I want him to be a resource, then I need to change the settings in here Server Setting-> Manage User, and check the box of ‘user can be as a resource’, something like that.

In a word, I want to figure out the way the resource comes from.

I got the following which I think it make sense but I need to further explanation:

    • A user is not necessarily a resource. For example your CEO will most likely not be acting as a resource in your global resource pool, but he still wants to view data in project server. That means he is a user but no resource.A global non generic work resource will on the other hand always be a user since the resource also needs a user log on. In summary you should map users that are part of your global resource pool to the resource pool synchronization and they should also be assigned to a user group to map them to the right user group for access and security purposes.

Thank all the experts very much!

  • HI there,

Please refer to a Tony's article:

     Type                                  Capability

    Resource                          Assigned to tasks
User                                Can login in the Project Server, but get no assignments

If I want him to be a resource, then I need to change the settings in here Server Setting-> Manage User, and check the box of ‘user can be as a resource’, something like that.- Yes, That's correct.

User can login to PWA but cannot be assigned to project assignments.

    More explanation:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/lduff/archive/2006/12/01/how-do-i-create-a-project-server-user.aspx

You can have your AD group can be sync with project server security group. so whenever you get a new account setup in group user in AD, next time, project server AD sync job user account in PWA.

    Hope that helps.
