CRM 2011 Custom Workflow Limitations

Question

Can Microsoft provide us the ability to call a web service from within a standard workflow? This basic functionality would allow us to host our custom server code in the cloud, and execute it against CRM when needed. Does this fit into the CRM onLine security model?

Hello -
CRM Online does not support custom workflow activities. You can hit external web services using a web request in a sandboxed plugin in online.

Hi Robert,
CRM Workflow is implemented using the WF4 workflow engine so in theory you should be able to add any workflow activity that comes with WF4 to call any WCF service (for example). However, because workflows cannot be sandboxed in .Net4, this functionality is restricted to CRM Onpremises. However, there is a workaround you can read about here

Good call Brandon. We tested it & works well. This is a good workaround.Monday, June 13, 2011 9:06 PM

we tried this, but this does not even qualify as a workaround. I like Brandon's approach above.Monday, June 13, 2011 9:07 PM
