Freebie AntiVirus For WHS? RRS feed

  • Question

  • The version of Avast I've been running on my XP Pro boxes doesn't like WHS.

Something about "You can install avast only on Windows NT4 with
Service Pack 4 or higher.   It cannot be installed on NT Server."

OTOH, the only paid "Server" version of Avast I could find they want four hundred bucks per year for.

    Ouch!

Anybody have a freebie that they're happy with under WHS?

An el-cheapo version of something-or-other that works?

  • Get the AVAST WHS edition. You will get Server license + 10 client licenses for $39.95 per year or even less if you sign up for two or three years.

EDIT: Actually it's $ 79.95 per year for WHS + 10 client licenses (which is still very cheap I think). Thanks Klode!

  • I think the license at 39.95$ is for the Windows Home Server only. No client, see details in your link. The one including 10 client licenses and WHS is called Avast! Professional Family Pack and there is a 60 day trial as well. Here is the link to it:

  • Sorry guys but how can the OPs question be marked as 'answered' if no one has actually provided him with what he asked for - a "Freebie Anti Virus for WHS?"

All that has been said is "Get the XYZ for $$$" without an answer as to why - looks more like an advertorial than an answer.

Are there no free AVs suitable for WHS or are the free ones no good compared with the purchased option? What are the other paid options compared to the single option given? Maybe this has been answered a thousand times and just needs linking?

IMO that's the kind of response that could justify the thread to be marked as 'answered'. I don't know the answer and would certainly like to know too.

I run NOD32 (paid) & Avast (free) on my 'client' PCs.
The answer is there is no free A/V for WHS.

  • Devil's Advocate question:  Is it a no-brainer that a WHS box needs AV?

I'm thinking that, in my case at least, the box has a router between it and "The World", and doesn't do email or anything like that.

I'm not worried about the forty bucks.... just wondering on principle.

I would'nt want my WHS being without an antivirus package. Simply because on it is stored all my valuable data. And one single virus on the server could do a lot of damage to it. Apart from that, I think avast! for WHS (or actually "avast! Family Park") is a great product hat gives me additional value:

    * I get 10 licenses for protecting *all* my workstations running avast Pro.
    * I get a WHS console Addin monitoring the protection status of all clients connected 24x7.
    * Great e-mail support!

Great value if you ask me, I can certainly recommend it!
No home server like Home Server

I hope this doesn't come off as sounding arrogant, but to me an extra forty bucks a year is pretty much the same as free.

The $300 or $400 I saw when looking at Avast's pages - now *that* got my attention... but forty bucks?  No problem.

OP asked two questions including  "An el-cheapo version of something-or-other that works?"

Since there's currently no free dedicated av for WHS and less then $80 for server + 10 clients is cery cheap I considered the question answered. You're right I should also have mentioned there's no dedicated free AV for WHS.

  • I just renewed my 'AVAST Pro Family Edition' which is the one that includes a WHS + 10 Avast Pro licenses.

    Original Purchase: $80
    Renewal: $56

It has worked very well and includes a plug-in for the WHS console.  And the current version of Avast Pro works great with my Windows 7 RC x64 client system.
