Office Home & Student won't validate RRS feed

  • Question

I have just installed a new hard drive and reinstalled WinXP Pro and Office 2007 Home and Student.  They both appeared to activate successfully on installation and program startup.
Today, using Word 2007 I tried downloading a new template, and it comes back and fails the validation.

When running the MGA diagnostic tool I get the information pasted below.

As you can see the Office appears to have a "101 Not Activated" response.

Yet, When in Word I go to "Word Options", "Resources," "Activate Office" I get the response that Office is already activated.

    When I run the “
Microsoft Genuine Advantage – Diagnostic Site” everything comes back “passed,” yet, when I hit the “Validate Office” button, it comes back with the “Understand the validation results” window (never really says it didn’t pass).

I am at my wits end.  Anyone able to help??

  • Kim,

Hello :-).  The reason why your Office Student version won't validate is because Microsoft Office XP Professional is currently installed and not activated. Please uninstall this older version of Office then activate and validate the Student version :-).

    Take care,

  • Stephen,

There are three other people, including myself, with the same problem here. Tech support have confirmed that my case relates to a fault in OGA - when there are multiple Office products on the same machine, OGA can fail saying that one or more products aren't activated even though all products are. Supposedly this has been escalated, but there has been no fix forthcoming.

I'm really very angry about this situation. I have dialog boxes popping up on my machine telling me that software for which I have the Dell receipt on file, as well as the CDs and CoA in my possession, is not genuine. I can't download templates.

I called Microsoft UK technical support (on a rather expensive 0870 number) who can give me no fix other than "uninstall Office XP", which I can't do due to PowerPoint 2007's abysmal handling of master slides in legacy files. The technician confirmed that this is a known fault with OGA - again, the case number is 1087468092.

Nobody from Microsoft has been gracious enough to reply to my forum post from nearly three weeks ago.

I do understand why we need DRM to protect commercial software - I have worked as a software engineer and have a pretty good idea about the economics of software development. However, when DRM is causing unacceptable collateral damage to legitimate users, it needs fixing or turning off for a while.

Please will someone from Microsoft do something about this unacceptable situation.

  • Greetings David,

The activation problem occurs when a computer has multiple versions of Office installed in which one may be a trial version.  When the trial version has expired and say when a user attempts to download a template from Microsoft the OGA controls may see all versions as not activated. The user should uninstall the trial version. OEM companies usually have Home and Student versions installed allowing customers to preview. Removing this from the computer then restarting the system should allow the system to pass activation. Please try this and let me if this resolves what you are experiencing. My past experiences this has resolved the problem. Please provide to me all error codes and/or messaging you receive. Also can you please run the MGA Diagnostic Test and post back your results so I may see what your experiencing?

    Thank you David,
