  • Question

  • Could you please confirm if I have been a vicitm of purchasing a fake copy of Widnows 7 Ultimate. My key comes up as blocked during activation yet my version of Windows checks out as genuine when running the on-line WGA verification. I am including the information genereated by MGADIAG below. Also, what repercussions will this have on my installed Microsoft Office 2010 once I get a genuine version of Windows 7 - will I still be able to activate Office 2010 on the new Windows installation?

    Many thanks,

    Andy

  • I will let Noel and Darin comment on whether or not you are running a genuine copy of Windows.

Even if you have to buy a new retail license for Windows, correcting the Windows licensing can involve nothing more than changing the Product Key on the System Properties page.   It is not required to reinstall Windows just to correct the licensing.

That should not disturb the status of your copy of Office as long as it is legitimate.  In any case, you can activate Office more than once on the same computer just like you can Windows should you decide that the Windows disc you bought might be untrustworthy (infected) and elect to reinstall Windows anyway.

The Office question really is, where did you get your copy of Office and is it genuine?  If you bought it at retail from Microsoft or a trusted Microsoft partner then you should be fine.  If you bought it from the same source that sold you Windows then you need to investigate,

Unfortunately, the Windows 7 Ultimate edition license installed was pirated from a "not-for-resale" MSDN Subscription license.  Contact the seller and demand a refund!  You can purchase a genuine Windows 7 Ultimate license from the Microsoft Store.  You'll need a "Full Version".

Unfortunately, your Key is from a not-for-resale MSDN account. You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key, and do NOT allow them to waste time with an RMA (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window. or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

  • Many thanks for the information. I got Office from Amazon so I am very hopeful that this IS genuine. Not so lucky regarding Windows I guess which I bought via ebay. If it is a fake it is unbelievably good - the disk/box/flier looked like the real thing, that's why I never even questioned it. I wonder how the average user is supposed to spot this.

  • Amazon is trustworthy.  Occasionaly an Amazon partner causes issues, but as long as you bought from Amazon itself I am confident your Office is fine.

The counterfeits are unbelievably good.  The one I got on eBay looked and felt genuine right down to very small details.  But once I knew what to look for I could see the incorrect details.

I pretty well knew I had been had when I got the shipping notice and it was shipped by a seller named 孙 强 in China.  Because of the good advice I got here I will get my money refunded.
