  • Question

  • Year changed from 2017 to 2018 and the 2017 data was lost. Looks like it wants me to set up all new. Where would this data be archived?

  • Have you been making regular backups?

  • When you were using Money in 2017, all of your data was saved in a .mny file, - probably named Money.mny.  That file should still be on your computer.  In addition, Money 2004 can also make a backup file which would be .mbf file.  Before you do anything else, locate those files and make copies of them to some other media such as a DVD or flash drive.  Then, locate the Money.mny file on your computer and double-click it to open it.  What happens?  Is your data there?

As you now know, it is essential to have multiple backups of your Money data.  In addition to frequently backing up to you hard drive you should copy your Money.mny file and/or a backup to other media every week or so in case your hard drive fails.  If you have really critical data, you should also have periodic backups that you keep off-site.

  • Did you attempt to use the Money "Archive" function? If so, we can tell you why you did not want to do that, and how to undo it.
