I don't see how you can see that "many of my posts have points". I can't see any points in threads. However to answer the question points are given for replies with additional points for posts that are marked as answers (though not your own) or marked as being helpful.Posts have no value at all - they can't be converted into anything. There are good only for bragging "I've got more points than you" and because it you get enough of them you get 1-5 crowns under your name. Before you ask, crowns aren't worth anything (except bragging :) )

Also,
To clarify, I looked at your contributions (posts and thread submissions) in these forums and notice that majority are threads that you've started. You don't get points if you start a thread and reply to a post on a thread that you've started.
Thanks.

Well. My english is not so good so I can't fully understand your answer.
My question was because I see many times in the box at the left of the post, 1, 2 or 3 votes. I really don't care about the points. Maybe if the amount of points give us a Windows 7 for free, I will think in a different way.
Anyway. I still don't understad what this points are for.
Thanks. -

Why are my points at forums.microsoft.com different than this system? A user's recognition points in the current forums will be different than the forums.microsoft.com site. There were known issues in the way the old system awarded points. These issues have been addressed in the current system by processing a users points based on their total record of participation.

DrGerry's profile shows that he has one post marked as an Answer. And looking at the activities page in his profile, he has multiple posts marked as helpful.
But he has zero points.
He should have some number greater than zero (I can't see all of the posts, so I don't know what the number should be).
