WHS can't even log in now :(

Question
-
Hi all,
I am currently having a very weird problem with WHS which started a couple of days ago. While streaming movies sometimes I would get disconnected from WHS and I can't seem to log back on. I would have to hard reset WHS a few times to get things back to normal. However today it seems that no matter how many times I reboot I can't seem to properly log into WHS. The furthest I went is after logging in and I get the messge "At least one driver or service failed during startup..." but I can't seem to get further than that. WHS boots up ok but its after I pressed CTRL ALT DEL to log on it takes ages. It takes around 20 min for me to see this message. I am logging in directly from the WHS machine. The HDD light seems to be permanently on while this is happening.
I do have uTorrent service running and it used to cause some problems. Everything ran ok few weeks ago but it was when I updated to the latest uTorrent I started having problems.
I really need help since a lot of my important stuff are stored in the server and I really do not want to loose them :(
Is there anyway I can boot into "Safe Mode"?
edit : I found out if I log on ultra quick after rebooting I will manage to get logged on but once some process/service starts to load I will hang...Sunday, February 7, 2010 11:50 PM

Hi,
I would boot into safe mode by pressing F8 just after the last BIOS message / before windows is shown on the screen. Then stop uTorrent from automatically starting on bootup. If uTorrent was setup properly as a service is shouldn't hog the system - my guess is it's running a higher priority than normal and trying to check the integrity of files that have been downloaded.
Also trying to minimise what you are calling a reboot. A reboot or shutdown is a system controlled method of turning off a PC - pulling the power or hitting the reset switch can often cause problems with a system. Due to this I would say you should consider doing a server recovery as you may have introduced significant file corruption - it you choose the recovery option (not new server install) all your data will be preserved.
Good luck,
Al

Thanks for the reply. I tried pressing F8 but that activated my mobo's HDD boot up selection. I tried pressing it a bit later and it also hanged. I somehow managed to log on after waiting a considerable amount of time and used the SC uTorrent command in the command prompt window to remove the service.
So far it's running good. I agree with your point about checking file integrity. This problem normally happens after I completeted a download. I guess that's when uTorrent tries to move the completed file from localdrive to the network drive. I have actually followed the instructions carefully when setting up uTorrent. It was running fine before I manually updated it to the 1.85 version. Sometimes I will get the error "This service uTorrent is already running" when I log on the WHS. I have created another account to install uTorrent in. I have tried re-installing uTorrent but that didn't seem to help.
Is there any way of cleanly removing uTorrent and reinstalling it? Also, do I still need to do the recovery option? I tried to ask for help in the uTorrent forums earlier but no one would answer me there about this situation.Monday, February 8, 2010 9:24 AM -
Hi,
I don't know how you installed uTorrent but to remove it you should be able to go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and find it in the list.
If you are getting errors when you login then chances are the uTorrent is trying to automatically start on login. I have uTorrent installed on my Home Server and it's been working fine. This guide seems to work well for most people:

Hi,
Thanks again for the kind reply. I have used a guide very similiar to the one you pointed out. I have created a second account with admin rights and installed uTorrent on that second account. I have also set uTorrent to auto load when Windows Starts (don't know if I should do this?) I have then created a uTorrent service and modified it so that it starts automatically using this second accounts credentials. I have also set the client to download the torrent to a local drive and then move the completed file to a network share.
I have tried uninstalling and removing the service, reboot and still get these errors. The files will get corrupted sometimes when downloading and sometimes my WebUI client will loose sync with the uTorrent client. It will report something different from what's going on. This is very noticable and I kept changing ports to try and "fix" this problem. If I try to log on to my second account I will also get the error "uTorrent tried to start but it seems that the service is already running". Perhaps I misunderstood the installation instructions?
Anyway, uTorrent is still installed but the service has been deleted at the moment. I am thinking of leaving it for 24-48 hours to observe server stability.Monday, February 8, 2010 2:05 PM -

Uncheck auto load of uTorrent. You are using a service to start uTorrent - setting the autoload means you will have two instances running, if they are both trying to work on the same file then this is probably the reason you are seeing corruption and the other problems you are experiencing.

Ah, so I don't have to let uTorrent program run on my second account even after I logged off from it? Just the service should be adequate?
By this I mean when logged onto the second account, I just have to start the service and log off without the need of opening the uTorrent program itself at all?Monday, February 8, 2010 2:59 PM -
Correct - the service is running uTorrent - you should only have one uTorrent client running at a time.

Thanks mate ;) Voted for being very helpful!
I guess I was foolish to think I should leave the main program AND the service both running at same time :PMonday, February 8, 2010 3:35 PM -
Right..... this is not good. Was running fine until I tried to use Windows Console to log in then it hanged again. Something about CLI hanging ... I suspect its the ATI catalyst driver. Will keep this thread updated once I find more info.
Is there a safe way to reboot if the PC hangs?
edit: Also noticed the network access will slow down and periodically hang when I am in the middle of a backup process. I have a Gigabit switch connected to all my PCs that runs backups.Monday, February 8, 2010 4:59 PM
