OCS 2007 Speech Server Service Won't Start RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have just completed an install of OCS 2007 Speech Server on a Windows 2003 server.  The install seems to complete successfully with no errors being logged yet when I attempt to start the Office Communications Server 2007 Speech Server Service from the Services control panel window it fails to start.

Unfortunately the entry in the Application Event Log states that no description can be found for the registered event.  When I attempt to start the service from the command line however I do get the following message:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 Speech Server>speec

    hservice.exe

Unhandled Exception: System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer fo

Any ideas on what I might be missing based on this message?

  • Hi,

I'm afraid we don't consistently test on machines which have been upgraded from XP -> 2003. In general I would recommend a clean install.

One possibility (we saw this on an XP -> Vista upgrade):

Check that the reg key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\PCHealth\ErrorReporting\DW\Installed exists and

contains a value DW0200 which points to dw20.exe in your common files folder. Something like:

    C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\DW\DW20.EXE

If not, add it, and see if that helps.

  • It sounds like the World Wide Web Publishing Service, - start it from service manager  and then open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager and restart the Default Web Site.

Let me know if this fixes the problem.  There is an outside chance that it could be the ASP.net installation and you would have to delete the ISAPI's and re-install - but definitely try this first.

You should note that we have only really seen this on upgraded OS's due to a change in a registry key.  I didn't get from your post that this machine was upgraded from XP - but that is the common theme when we have seen this error.

  • I restarted the WWW Publishing Service and restarted the default web site but unfortunately that still didn’t resolve the problem.

This is a test development box that was upgraded from XP to 2003 so if we can't find a work-around for this we might be able to wipe the box and start from scratch and see if that solves our problems.  I'll definitely take any other possible work arounds first though.

    Thanks.

  • Edwin,

Thanks a lot!  That worked.  That key and value was missing but once I added it the service started without issue.

I really appreciate everyone's help on this.
