How do I disable the WGA Installation Wizard? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently installed a new, valid copy of Windows XP Pro SP3 (permanent license) on my machine, and registered the product. Upon completing the updates following installation, the WPA Installation Wizard pops up whenever I start up the computer.  I do not wish to install WPA.  How can I disable the WPA Installation Wizard and/or delete the WPA install program?  If it is deleted or the Installation Wizard is disabled, will these changes be discarded when Windows Update next runs?

Help me stop MS from hijacking my computer!

  • Hello plebeian_z,

The Windows Genuine Advantage Update is like any other update.  If you do not want it, decline the End User Licensing Agreement.  You will not see any more prompts to install that update until the next edition is released.

The WGA Notifications Utility is itself updated several times a year, and when a new one is released it will come via Windows Update.  If you do not want it, decline that new one, too.

Microsoft is hardly "hijacking" your computer. :-)

  • Thanks - that was easy.

As to whether the computer is being hijacked, when a program embedded in the OS connects to the internet at will to "phone home" and disables one's OS if a file having to do with authentication is amiss, I would call that a hijacking of my computer. The effect to a user would be the same as any other malware.  Would you rather have your computer at least function using a pirated version or have it shut down?  Really, the whole WGA is so blatantly about getting users to police themselves for the benefit of MS at their own inconvenience.  If someone's running crappy pirated software, they most likely know it - and if they don't, at least they'll still be able to use their computer if they don't install WGA.  Most users, like me, have a fully valid copy of the OS that was paid for with their cash money and they know it.  MS made the software.  But I OWN it. Not them.

  • Hello plebeian_z,

There is no "disabling" of the Operating System done by WGA.

WGA is equal parts protection of intellectual property from a profit motive standpoint, and an internet security initiative that recognizes that a large % of counterfeit Windows installations are rife with embdded malware that often ends up powering increasingly effective botnets.

If you spent 3+ years participating in this forum like I have, you'd know that your statement, "If someone's running crappy pirated software, they most likely know it - and if they don't, at least they'll still be able to use their computer if they don't install WGA." is incorrect.  Up until very recenlty, most people who posted in the WGA forum were VERY surprised to the point of belligerent indignance, and you can see that same surprise all over the Office forum.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that just because you paid cash money for something, you purchased a genuine something.  Just visit the Office forum to see ALL the people who bought copies of Office on internet auction sites who were sent counterfeit software.

Finally, you do NOT own the software.  While you do own the physical pieces and parts of the computer and you do own the media on which the software came, you own a license to use the software in accordance with the terms you agreed to when you installed it.

  • Hello anby_lavilla,

Does your computer have a Certificate of Authentiicty (CoA) for Windows on it?  If so, please tell us what version and edition of Windows is listed on the CoA (don't post the product key!).

If you purchased Windows in a retail box, the CoA is on the boxtop of the glossy paperboard retail box.
