TurboTax 2008 Files not included in OneCare Backups

Question
-
I noticed that the 2008 TurboTax files were not included in my latest OneCare backup. The files ending in .tax (previous years) are included but this year TurboTax is using .tax2008 as a file name suffix. How do get the .tax2008 files to be included and how can I assure that any future years will be included as well.Monday, March 2, 2009 1:09 PM

Did you confirm that the files were not backed up when you selected the option for "other files" in the backup plan?
If they aren't being backed up, then I would recommend that you copy the tax files and rename them for backup purposes. I do not expect OneCare to be updated to look for additional file name extensions. I can't confirm that the new file extension is or is not backed up, but expect that you have checked carefully.

Sorry, but this is not a solution. As a professional programer, the real solution for this problem is for the backup to include all files with a suffix of .tax* so that all files with .tax , .tax2008, .tax2009, etc are included. The files types should include the use of the "*" wildcard symbol. It is way too difficult to configure the backup to get the .tax2008 files. The use of the "other files" option is listing thousands of other files. I just need the 4 files that end in .tax2008 not the other 1,000 files that that show up under "other files". If I exclude all directories except the Turbo Tax directory that screws up the back plan for my non-Turb tax files. Come on Microsoft, you can do much better than that.Friday, March 6, 2009 10:19 PM

I didn't say it was a solution. I am simply advising you how OneCare backup works, as limited as that may be, and offered a workaround. OneCare backup does not allow for a user to specify extensions to be included and there is no way to change this, unfortunately.
You can select the file type other and then exclude folders and files that you do not want backed up - and, yes, that will likely be a tedious process.
I agree that either option is less than satisfactory.-steve

Ben,
You might double check. As a user of TTax2008 you comment concerned me too. I looked in my last backup report and did find it was backed correctly with the tax2008 extension. Additionally you can save your return as a PDF for another copy.

Thanks for reporting that the files are indeed backed up, Mark.

Ben, I do understand it is not easy to rename all the files. Instead of renaming all the file extensions, You can just try to Zip the complete folder and try to backup.
I am not sure whether this will work or not. Just give a try.Monday, April 6, 2009 1:41 PM
