Computer crashed, I need to restart in safe mode- Where to now?

Question
-
I have a laptop that has been identified by Microsoft "?" 2008 as having over 1,000 viruses. This just happened one day all of a sudden. I bought OneCare and tried to install. Install was not complete and Windows will not work. Before it shut down I saw that there was a line of code in Windows system files that were being "impersonated". When it tried to clean them I got a crash. I can start in safe mode but then I cannot activate my wireless modem so that I can contact this site or complete installation.
Should I re-install Windows XP? I guess I am not sure how smoothly that will go.
Here is what I get when I try to restart my laptop:
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
A worker thread is impersonating another process. The work item forgot to disable impersonation before it returned.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure that any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode top remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.

Before this The Microsoft malicious program scrubber that was free from Microsoft was running as I was installing OneCare. The Malicious Program remover was trying to remove two files it had found in Windows system files.. It said they were trojans.

You are most likely infected with XP Antivirus 2008 or a variation of it. One care will not install correctly on an infected computer. I suggest calling the Microsoft Security Hotline for help with malware removal before installing One Care - 1-866-727-2338.Saturday, August 9, 2008 3:43 AMModerator
