  • Question

  • results from MGAdiag:

basically i've installed a new copy of windows XP home on my PC. but it is not giving me the option to activate it (even when going to system tools in start menu the option is not there). I cannot connect the computer to the internet whatsoever, as there still appear to be problems with Ethernet controller driver. there were problems with video and audio drivers, but have managed to install working copies of these.

it appears to me that i cannot activate windows without internet connection, and i cannot get an internet connection without activating windows. please help. thanks in advance, stuart

  • If you cannot successfully activate via the internet, then choose the alternative option to "activate by phone".

How to activate Windows XP by phone:

To contact a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:

    1. Click 'Start', point to 'All Programs', point to 'Accessories', point to 'System Tools', and then click 'Activate Windows'.
      Or,
click the Windows Activation icon in the notification area (aka system Tray).
      Or,
clicking Start button, then Run, and type in "oobe/msoobe /a", then press the Enter key located on your keyboard.

    2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.

    3. Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box, and then click Next.

    4. When activation is completed and you receive the following message, click OK.
"You have successfully activated your copy of Windows".

unable to activate by phone either.

when i turn on the computer the windows activation icon appears in the system tray, but as soon as i click on it, it disappears without anything happening.

have tried the "c:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a" prompt (aswell as your alternative - "oobe/msoobe /a") but windows cannot find that.

nor is windows activation in system tools at the start menu.

have repaired the windows installation but is unable to copy the following files upon setup:

    sqloledb.dll

    sqlxmlx.dll

    sr.sys

    srclient.dll

and when setup nearly complete the following window appears with "ok" tab as the only option:

"windows cannot load the Internet configuration Library (ICFGNT.DLL). the following error occured: The speciic module could not be found."

I am lost, and so far so are the microsoft tech support.

    any ideas??

    again, thanks for the help.

  • Hello Stuart,

It sounds like your installation of Windows may be corrupted, I would highly suggest you either contact the computer manufacturer for support or reinstall your copy of Windows.  Your question is off topic as well as outside my area of knowledge. I suggest posting your question to the Discussions in Windows XP General Forum newsgroups here:
