"add selected disk as server backup target"? RRS feed

  • Question

  • When you add a disk into the storage pool you get this option as an alternative to adding to the storage pool. If selected, the next screen says that the data on the disk will be preserved. I presume this means the contents of the drive will be copied to the storage pool. Will WHS do this just once, or will it schedule a regular back up of the disk?

With this option you add a disk as a WHS backup disk. Once added you can make backups of your WHS folders. From the console, select the "Computer & Backup" tab. Then select the your server from the list of computers, right-click the option "Backup Now"....

Normally one would use this to make a safety backup of the data on your server using an USB or eSata external drive: connect the drive, add it as a backup drive to the WHS and backup the server. One done, remove the disk again, disconnect it and store it off-site in a safe place. If anything "bad" happens to your server, you will not loose valuable data.
