Certificate error trying to remote desktop to WHS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Like many I'm having problems installing the connector software after the update.  The other problem is I'm getting a certificate error when I try to connect to my WHS server.  Anyone else having this problem?

  • For the first problem, how, exactly (please list steps) are you attempting to update the Connector?
Also, have you by chance moved/renamed/deleted the Windows Home Server Connector Software folder (in \shares\public)?

For the second problem:  if the cert error occurs only when accessing the server from within your LAN (e.g. http://<servername> ), but not when accessing it from outside (http://<yourname>.homeserver.com), then that is normal operation.  The 'issue' is that the SSL certificate was issued for your internet name, not your local (LAN) name.

  • I had removed the directory where the connector software was loaded.  This in trying to fix the file problem back when I was having a problem with a USB drive.  Put the directory back together following the directions.  Finally got the connector software to install by running setup.  This fixed the certificate problem with remote desktop.  I guess it needs the connector software to be working in order for remote desktop to get the certificate.

  • I had the exact same experience on my new PC, I tried to Remote Desktop to my WHS and got a cert error. Installed the Connector software and the error is gone.

  • Certificate error...

I don't get the error when I access my WHS server from my main computer. But I do get it when I access from my backup computer that is connected to the Internet via a LAN. Other people get it when I send them a link to my WHS server.

What do I have to do to stop the error?

    Thanks for the help.

  • Can you give us more information about your server? for example, if you have an HP MediaSmart Server, and you're using the TZO-supplied vanity URL that HP arranged with them, you'll see a certificate error when you access your home server from afar. you won't see this if you're using the homeserver.com vanity URL that Microsoft includes (free) with WHS from afar however. This difference in behavior is because Microsoft also includes an SSL certificate that's registered to your specific vanity URL. TZO doesn't.

If you have a TZO domain, it's possible to purchase and install a certificate. See e.g. this tutorial at myhomeserver.com.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

    Hi,

Can you please let us know if your problem has been solved. If yes please let us know how.

    Thanks in advance!

  • I think this URL explains the issue:

    http://mswhs.com/2007/07/05/is-there-a-problem-with-your-security-certificate/

Assuming you are seeing a certificate error as you try to remote desktop into your server, you can continue beyond the certificate error to proceed.   This support article talks
    about that too:
