    I've run the diagnostics and this is the information it gave me.  my desk top screen has disappeared ... I fear if I log off I won't be able to get back on

    The chances are that this is a transient race condition that will resolve itself after a reboot or two.
    Even if the situation doesn’t resolve itself, Windows 7 does NOT lock you out of the system in the way that earlier OS’s did, so there is nothing to be afraid of.
     
    If after a reboot, the  problem remains or returns, post another report while the notification is showing – and check what happens with the notification after you’ve run the report.
