version of vista is not genuine after over 2 years of use

Question
-
I have a Gateway laptop. I bought it 2.5 years ago with Windows Vista pre-installed. It's been fine until 2 days ago when I started getting a message on log-in that says my version of Windows is not genuine. It asks me to validate windows. I follow the prompts and it says my version is not genuine, enter a different key or purchase a new key.
When I tried to validate winows I got the following message: Validation was interupted.
The validation service is unable to determine whether Windows is genuine.
