Confused about FPSE and VWD with IIS7 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Bottom line: I want to be able to open Visual Web Developer on my local machine and design web pages on a remote server. The local machine is a 64-bit Windows 7 laptop, the server is a 64-bit Windows 2008 R2 virtual machine running IIS7.

What I have gathered is that this is not possible unless the FrontPage Server Extensions are installed on the web server. This seems absolutely bonkers to me since support for FPSE is long gone (2006?) Furthermore, the version of FPSE I would need to install requires not only a license to be purchased, but also a license server to be installed, which has a list of requirements about a mile long.

So I'm mainly asking this stupid question here to make sure there's not a hole in my knowledge. Can I develop a website on a remote server without FPSE or not?
