Question about previous experience and MCPD RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi everyone. I'm a developer who's worked with VB6 the past 10 years and not had the opportunity to move up to .NET all this time. I have no previous MS Certs but would like to go for an MCPD. I've read most of the exam descriptions and they all say that candidates should already have a working knowledge of Visual Studio 2005/2008 with at least a year or more of experience.

While I'm sure it would be helpful, do you really think it's necessary in order to pass the exams? I'd like to think my previous 10 years as a developer would count for something. Would the exams be too difficult without the VS 2005/2008 experience already under my belt? Or should I just go for it anyway?

  • Yes your experience may help but may is the operative word here, you need to read very comprehensive VB.NET books covering features related to .NET 2.0 to be able to relate to the features covered in exams 70-536, 70-526, 70-528 and 70-529.  These are the baseline exams that gives you MCTS Windows Developer, MCTS Web Developer and MCTS Distributed developer.

Now you can choose to do only two to get one MCTS.  I think you should focus on MCTS which you can study and pass then get some experience and see if you can add the MCPD later.  Just my opinion.

    MCTS Windows Developer
    Exams 70-536 and 70-526

    MCTS Web Developer
    Exams 70-536 and 70-528

    MCTS Distributed Developer
    Exams 70-536-529

  • Thanks for answering! Yes, I had planned to get MCTS first; MCPD is later goal. So do you think studying .NET 2.0 would be a better place to start rather than jumping right in on 3.5? I was recently laid off and should be able to study full time, at least for a month or two.

  • If you have time then this first thread covers most of all you need to know about taking the MCTS exams.  I don't write VB so I have also covered how to study for the VB exams in the second thread and I am here if you still have more questions.
