Mediasmart WHS NIC disabled - Need to reenable on headless system RRS feed

  • Question

  • Let's not get into how or why it was turned off, let's just accept the fact that it's off. :)

I need to re-enable the network card on my HP Mediasmart 485 WHS, however I can't seem to get the system to boot back into the OS. On top of that, any USB keyboard I try won't work. So I can't even blindly run commands and try to turn it back on... And I don't have my server recovery disc. Yeah, things aren't working out.

However, I do have a dock for internal drives hooked up to another system. Is it possible to use this access to the drive and somehow turn the NIC back on?

  • Well, if you've disabled networking, USB keyboards aren't working, and you've lost your server recovery DVD, how about calling HP and getting a replacement DVD? You'll have to pay something for it, but I guarantee it will be quite a bit less than the special cable that will give you the ability to connect keyboard, video, and mouse to your headless server.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • How do you know your keyboards are not working?

The other option is to contact HP Support and get a new set of discs:

If you attempt to boot your system disk in another machine you will end up with a new set of hardware drives being installed and your system may not boot when the disk is put back in the EX485.

  • I would have to aggree with Ken here, call HP.
However, would a usb-vga adapter help, or would that require installing drivers first?

  • One thing that isn't brought up here is if your not using the same keyboard in the same USB port the system has to detect the keyboard as a new hardware device and that could take a full 2+ minutes. The new hardware detection process does not take place until the system has finished it's boot up process up to and including the login prompt and all hardware and startup files in the registry. If you have a USB mouse a good test is plug in both the keyboard and the mouse, insure that your forcing a new hardware detect on both devices, when the mouse starts moving around about 30 seconds after that start testing the keyboard by doing a ctrl, alt +del to get to the login prompt. Now remember a full 2+ minutes not a "it should be done by now" 2 minutes. I usually startup the system go get a cup of coffee or do something else then come back and test it.

  • You can tell if the keyboard is working by pressing the Num Lock or Caps Lock keys and seeing if the LED on the keyboard changes.

  • Here's a idea that might work no guarantees. Documentation says WHS doesn't support wireless. See if you can find (Google, Bing) a wired USB NIC that'll load at least generic drivers; hopefully it will give you network access for RDP so you can fix your on-board NIC. Even though you can't see anything, you can check your router to see if it has issued an IP, assuming you've got another networked client or just RDP using your server name.

  • Without a keyboard and screen you can't connect to a access point.
