  • Hello kiegeani,

Right now, your HP computer has a Volume Licensing edition of XP Pro installed (Line 10), and that installation was done with a now-blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) (Line 2).  VLKs are blocked by Microsoft at the request of the original keyholder for such reasons as the key was lost, stolen, compromised, misused, or expired.  Also, MS may have blocked the key if it notices a pattern of misuse, ie, more installations of XP using that key than authorized.

If you search the forum for the part of the VLK reported by the mgadiag utility, 4RHJG-83M4Y-7X9GW, you will see that it is a very "popular" VLK with many, many other posters having submitted reports with that same blocked VLK.

As a rule, VL editions of XP should not be sold to individual consumers.  Businesses, schools and gov'ts normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers.  Aslo, a Volume License for XP is an upgrade license ONLY and cannot be used as the original license on a new computer.

This is why you were seeing the "software counterfeiting" messages on your computer, because the current installation of XP is an unauthorized installation.

Luckily, the solution to your XP problem is simple.  The Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) affixed to the case of the computer will tell you which version and edition of Windows came with the computer.

If the computer has a CoA for XP Pro, try using the Key Updater Utility  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/pkuinstructions.aspx to genuine-ize your nongenuine installation of XP Pro.

If the computer has a CoA for any other edition of XP, or another version of Windows, use the recovery solution supplied by HP to replace the nongenuine volume installation of XP Pro with the genuine OEM installation of Windows.  Be sure to back up and offload your data before you do this because typically the recovery process destroys all data on the hard disk.    If the recovery discs are not available for order from HP, try http://www.restoredisks.com

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report that pertains to Office:

The report is telling us that you have a nongenuine installation of a Volume Licensing-only edition of Office 2003 Pro.  Your installation was done with a now-blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK).

Volume Licensing editions of Office such as your installation of Office 2003 Professional are not to be sold to individual consumers, and are only to be sold to larger businesses, educational institutions, and governmental agencies who need flexibility in installing and deploying many copies of Office.

These Volume Licenses should not be sold to consumers because they are not permanent licenses; they are subject to a current Volume Licensing Agreement that has a finite term, sort of like a lease.  Consumers thinking they purchased permanently licensd software would understandably be upset when their software stopped working at the end of a lease.

If you purchased Office 2003 Professional thinking you were buying genuine retail Office Professional for consumers with a permanent license, please return the software to the place of purchase for replacement or a full refund.

You can also review the Office Genuine Advantage FAQ to see if you qualify for the discounted or complimentary replacement program called the Office Genuine Offer:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en&sGuid=4ba10af9-ffaa-4cb9-9af4-6aff8a220262#ID0EKNAC
