HELP!! Now saying my Windows 7 isnt genuine!! RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've had my Dell laptop since 2010, I bought it from Best Buy. A few days ago it started saying that my Windows 7 isn't Genuine. I've run the validation tool and it still says it isn't Genuine. I saw something saying that it could be that some files were corrupted or removed and that's what is causing this, I don't know. What I do know is that my Windows 7 was Genuine when I bought the laptop. Here is my diagnostic report:

  • Please attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate using INternet Explorer - what happens?

Afterwards, please reboot, and post a new MGADiag report.

I was expecting validation to reset that error message and timestamp - obviously, it hasn't

Are you still seeing a non-genuine message?

  • No I'm not but it wasn't showing up all the time either to begin with. Starting a few days ago it would show up randomly in the bottom right of my desktop and a box would pop up saying that my windows was showing as not genuine and that I should go to the microsoft website and validate.

  • That sort of symptom is typical of a race condition, where two processes compete for resources - if one of the processes is the Software Protection system, and it 'loses' the race, then it sulks, and throws up the warning :)

What Anti-virus product are you using? - what other AV's have EVER been installed? What other security software is installed? (AVs are possibly the most common/likely to cause such problems.)

  • McAfee and Microsoft Security essentials. Microsoft security essentials is disabled, McAfee is what is currently running.

  • Oh help. :(

What other AV's have EVER been installed?

MSE has no chance or running properly with McAfee installed, so you may as well uninstall it.

What effect installing MSE on top of McAfee will have is anyone's guess - but your best option would be to also uninstall that AND run the MCPR clean up tool, and then reinstall ONE AV only.

  • Those are the only two AV's that have ever been installed on this computer. What is the MCPR clean up tool?
    Wednesday, April 10, 2013 3:15 PM
  • It's McAfee's cleanup tool to remove the dregs of all versions of McAfee software from a computer to prepare it for install of a new AV. Best to use it even when upgrading versions of McAfee>

First uninstall McAfee from the normal Programs & Features entry, then...

Download the McAfee removal tool from:

    http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

Click Save, and save the file to a folder on your computer.

Navigate to the folder where you saved the file.

right-click on MCPR.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'  to run the removal tool.

    when complete, reboot.

  • Ok I did that and uninstalled MSE. When I did that something called Windows Defender popped up and said it was out of date. I didn't see that on the uninstall programs list.
    Wednesday, April 10, 2013 4:15 PM
  • Windows Defender is the built-in anti-malware app in Vista and Windows 7 - it's disabled by most Anti-Virus programs (including both McAfee and MSE).

Which AV are you going to reinstall?

  • Probably MSE. The McAfee I had was just a virus scanner.
    Wednesday, April 10, 2013 9:25 PM
  • ..so you were effectively running with no AV??

You need to do some serious malware scans then, as well as installing an AV.

  • Ya because I don't download anything unless I know the website and publisher. Something would pop up and tell me that it wasnt a good idea to download things because certificates and/or licenses were expired or not available at all. It could have been McAfee doing all that, I don't know. I wasn't paying for a McAfee subscription so it was whatever was free off of their website that I had.
