Upgraded PC - Question about re-activation RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just upgraded my PC (new MB, Mem, CPU and VGA) and had to re-install Vista. When I went to re-activate online it told me my key was already in use and I had to call Microsoft to activate over the phone.

    The questions I have are:

Will this happen every time I install Vista on this same PC or is this only because I did such a major upgrade?

Is there a way to actually "properly uninstall" Vista? Obviously I formated the Vista partition and re-installed my retail copy.

My hope is that next time because it now knows I am still on the same hardware it will re-activate online instead of the phone option. Yes, I re-install Vista regularly just like XP after working it over with vLite, slipstream drivers and adding service packs and patches. (Yes, I was excited about Microsoft changing their activation/EULA)

Answers

  • The telephone activation was only required because such a major hardware upgrade/change was performed.

You followed the proper installation procedure Smile.
