Put in a new hard drive and installed a brand new, genuine XP Home SP2, IE8. Computer worked fine. After Windows Update installed SP3 I get the message "The product key is not valid for this media type. Please use the correct installation CD to reinstall Windows. Error code: 0x80040509".
Another post recommended to go online with the affected computer and yada, yada, yada.
How am I supposed to go online with a computer that won't let me log in??- Changed type Darin Smith MS Tuesday, February 2, 2010 9:24 PM

Hello cs92563,
In order to receive the best support, we request all users initially download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool (MGADiag.exe) at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click "Continue", click the "Copy" button then “Paste” the report into a reply message in this thread.

If you are unable to login, I recommend creating a (no cost) support request at http://support.microsoft.com/gp/contactwga
Note: if you are unable to login into the computer (regular or safe mode), there little support is going to be able to do. It's a little like having engine trouble but the repair person isn't able to open the car's hood.
Thank you,
