Live Mesh Beta: Suggestions Thread

General discussion
-
Live Mesh has moved into the beta phase of testing! During our technology preview stage, we had a thread all about suggestions – A Wish List of features that you wanted to see in Live Mesh as it continued to develop. Now that we’re a beta, we thought we’d start a new thread: same idea, but a fresh beginning. To get the ball rolling, we’ve listed below the top 15 suggestions from the old Wish List. You can let us know which of those you’d like to see, of course, but we also want to hear your new ideas. So, the sky is the limit: let us know what you’d like to see from Live Mesh in the future!
Top 15 Suggestions:
-
Integrate Live Mesh with Office Live, SkyDrive, and FolderShare
-
Live Mesh software support of Server SKUs
-
More fine-grained control over which files and folders Live Mesh syncs, and where
-
Ability to sync Outlook .pst files
-
Increased storage space on the Live Desktop
-
Live Mesh software support for Windows XP 64-bit
-
Ability to edit files right on your Live Desktop
-
Support for Live Mesh Remote Desktop sessions through authenticated proxies
-
Some form of file versioning where Live Mesh will keep older copies of edited files, and give you the ability to restore those older versions should you want to.
-
Live Mesh support for Xbox and Zune
-
The ability to add networked folders to your mesh
-
Wake-on-LAN capability in Live Mesh, so that it can wake your computers remotely
-
Delta sync functionality
-
User-controlled settings for both sync (e.g., forcing sync of a particular file or folder) and Live Mesh Remote Desktop (e.g., disabling the service through the Live Mesh UI)
-

OK, I'll go out on a limb here and suggest that some sort of support for Linux (and other OSes) be considered. I have no idea how hard that would be, though I'm thinking that Linux must be somewhat similar to support for a Mac. I think it would be a huge win for Live Services (and Azure) to be able to have Linux boxes/devices able to participate in some shared activity.
(Disclaimer: I don't have a Linux box, and we're a Microsoft Windows shop at work in terms of servers and MOST applications we develop. But there is a growing number of useful Linux-based devices that could benefit from the features that Live Mesh offers...)Thursday, October 30, 2008 6:57 PM -
#1 for me is Delta sync functionality
only transfering the data that needs to be transfered is the most important.
Also I would like to see (and this applies to alot of the services that microsoft is offering), is a public folder/section. This is the area that does not require any authorization to access about you. Pictures you place in here (or set with this modifier) would be accessable to any website that you go to, same with contacts, files, folders etc, without any kind of authorization. There should be a setting if an item in here is only readable by everyone or writeable too. There should be warnings when users place stuff in here that anyone can access and modify it, and they should have access to what is stored there, and each website should be limited as to how much it can place in there (a default of like 10Mb per site maybe, changeable by the user). Also by default this public section would be turned off, and would need to be enabled by the user.- Edited by obsid Thursday, October 30, 2008 7:44 PM

For me, the following are most important:
- Support for Server SKUs (this worked up until one of the last CTP versions) EDIT: I don't use it yet, but is WHS considered a Server SKU?
- Remote Desktop through Auth Proxies
- Granular control over folder sync (eg sync all files in Folder A, except files x, y & z)
- Delta-sync
I see they are all on the list, but the above are my preferences based on how I am using Live Mesh. Oh, and a native symbian S60 client :) (the WAP site works fine on my Nokia E71).
Lastly, the sync status bars in the Beta are a useful touch.- Edited by dmensingh Thursday, October 30, 2008 9:50 PM

The ability to download files through the Live Mesh desktop/site from remote PCs for selected folders without having to synchronize them and use storage space.

First off, I'd like to say well done guys for going out on a limb and providing mac support, you don't have to but it's made apple seam like the bad guys now! (In some strange way...)I'm not sure if this is possible, but maybe a way to have the live mesh client running full-time in mac with out the icon being in the 'tray'Apart from that, you've got everything I want for Christmas on that list ;)

I have used Logmein for "family support" for years and it is absolutely fantastic!
To be able to use Live Mesh in a similar manner, it would be necessary for Live Mesh to allow you to "share" Remote Desktop access to machines in your mesh with other people - either temporarily or on a more permanent basis.- Edited by Nicholas Oxhøj Friday, October 31, 2008 9:59 AM

You missed one TOP suggestion I think (or it might by under number one)
The ability to set the destination sync folder on the machine you are putting up the initial sync (link in de FolderShare UI). I've create a discussion thread here while ago and you said you love the mokups. Is this still comming ? I called it the "explorer device" feature and added it to the Device Ring next to "connect to device".

I'd have to say support for removable media, such as USB drives. I saw it quite a few times on the old wish list, and I think it's a good idea.
+1 for delta sync, +1 for Outlook sync, and +1 for increased storage.

- Increased storage space on the Live Desktop
- The ability to add networked (removable) folders, memory cards or usb disks to your mesh
-
Wake-on-LAN capability in Live Mesh
-
Delta sync functionality
-
User-controlled settings for both sync (e.g., forcing sync of a particular file or folder) and Live Mesh Remote Desktop (e.g., disabling the service through the Live Mesh UI)

+1 for support of removable devicesFriday, October 31, 2008 5:27 PM
-
-Support for Thumbdrives, etc.
-A true Windows Mobile Client similar to the PC Client in addition to the wap site.Friday, October 31, 2008 6:27 PM -
Whee, I have a mobile client. And . . . now I can't sync my mobile favorites.
I have my profile favorites folder added to my mesh. I have a mobile favorites subfolder, but there's no way to replicate that on the phone. Right now I have to choose either syncing that or syncing my favorites folder across all my PCs. That's lame.Friday, October 31, 2008 7:54 PM -
I would like to see a little more users administration abilities.
Like the ability to add a user who is a member of one folder to another folder without needing to manually enter their email address. "A drop down list of users, maybe?"
And the ability to create user groups like "Family" or "Friends" or "Public" so that many users can be added to folders at once by just adding them to the appropriate group and allowing that group access to the folder.Friday, October 31, 2008 9:25 PM -
1 An easy way to see the status of the pc you are currently logged in : synced or not synced
There are times when Live Mesh is preparing a sync and does not show any sync activity.
Why ?
- An explicit indication of the status can be helpful when you arrive at another location and connect to the mesh.
Once it says "synced" you can start work and not run into any conflicts later.
- If I connect to the mesh for syncing before going of to work I need an indication of Live Mesh that everything is synced so I can turn of my home PC and head of to work.
Currently you only get an indication with a progress bar in the devices tab but there are a number of reason that this is not a reliable indication.
If the try icon would change color, eg.
green = in sync with the mesh,
red = Live Mesh is syncing
Or just a textual indication when hoovering over the tray icon.
2 Live Mesh can show what files it is up or downloading
I just diagnosed a problem with some data files that are "never finished". There is a program, ClipMate, that updates its data files at regular intervals and since Live Mesh does not support delta sync it is _always_ uploading these files, Live Mesh never finishes.
I could diagnose this with the logs but if not than my Internet Provider account would have maxed out since here in Belgium almost every provider has max Upload limit per month. Of course such a problem will give non techies a bad experience since they will be on smallband for the rest of the month or buy extra bandwidth.
If Live Mesh would tell with witch files he is currently busy with non techies should figure this out (possibly)
3 The ability to right click on an arbitrary file or folder and generate an url that I can share
This way If I want to quickly share something it's a matter of 2 clicks
From the previous suggestions I pick
1 Delta sync functionality
2 Some form of file versioning where Live Mesh will keep older copies of edited files, and give you the ability to restore those older versions should you want to.
3 Increased storage space on the Live Desktop
4 Wake-on-LAN capability in Live Mesh, so that it can wake your computers remotelySaturday, November 1, 2008 11:14 AM - An explicit indication of the status can be helpful when you arrive at another location and connect to the mesh.
-
Two issues:
1. Integrate sync function in mesh mobile with ActiveSync, like the exchange server sync.
2.Sync contacts, tasks, appointments from the mobile phone.

I'd love to see the ability to share a folder on a device in my mesh to other devices in my mesh without synching it to them. Eg, sharing out a folder with several gigs of data in various files, and allowing devices to pull down only the files they want to access.Saturday, November 1, 2008 4:16 PM

I really miss some statistics what's going on when syncing. With Foldershare you can see a percentage of the file which has been synced and the speed at which this is happening. This can help you to diagnose network setup issues etc.
I hope that a future version will address this and will give more information if syncing has been completed and if not, how much (approx.) data still needs to be synced.Saturday, November 1, 2008 7:12 PM -
I do not like the new behavior of the bar on the side of Live Folders. Having to manually open each one up in every Live Folder on every computer in the mesh is annoying. Can the old behavior be restored or an option provided that globally sets the Live Folder bar to stay open?Saturday, November 1, 2008 7:27 PM

My vote for a native Symbian S60 client. This one should also offer Remote Desktop capability. (Does the Windows Mobile client offer Remote Desktop capability?)
Edit: Oh yeah, and how about a Windows 2000 client? (...which client should also offer Remote Desktop capabilities...) Is there already such a thing?- Edited by HrundiBakshi Sunday, November 2, 2008 9:30 AM

My suggestions:
- Hide/disable the fancy Vista login screen graphics (similar to how the desktop background is hidden) so that Mesh Remote Desktop doesn't take so long to draw when logging in
- An option on the Mesh Explorer context menu similar to "Clear from this device" - which stops synchronisation of that folder to the device and deletes the files locally; unlike simply deleting them in explorer which would (I think?) also delete them from all other devices
- Edit 3: Relating to the above: You should (must?) get a warning that you are about to delete a file from all devices when you press 'delete' in explorer on a mesh-shared file.
- +1 to the requests for a more granular view of what is happening in synchronisation
- edit: When on a remote desktop session, the mesh notifications window should instantly appear, rather than 'fade in'; the fade in is very painful to wait for on a low bandwidth connection
- edit 2: "one way" synchronisation for folders; as others have said, some kind of delta or other intelligent handling. For example if the file properties of my music changes (last played, * rating) there's no real need to synch that across my other devices. Maybe music needs to be special cased, since easy synching of music files is probably one of the most obvious consumer use cases of file synchronisation

We really really need the ability to block remote desktop connections.
This is the only thing stopping me rolling this out into a corporate enviroment where remote desktop is totally forbiden. The ability to switch remote desktop off for selected machines is a must.Tuesday, November 4, 2008 12:14 AM -
Ability to change folder location easier on the target machine, desktop doesn't cut it and removing and re-syncing is to cumbersomeTuesday, November 4, 2008 1:36 AM

I think that delta sync is the most important. Also, it'd be great to have linux support.

+1 Wake-on-LAN capability in Live Mesh
Also, I'm experimenting with meshing my visual studio 2008 projects folder. As such, i have lots of file changes, especially when i'm doing MS Tests. So, I work with mesh offline most of the time.
As such, I would love to see ....
a) Mesh start up MINIMIZED. so if i do NOT log in automatically .. that's fine .. but i don't want that blasted 'sign in' window to show and the systray window to show.
b) Schedule when or how long syncs should check/take place. Eg. midnight or every hour (from when the machine started) or what not.
I so hope this gets heard :)
thanks -- and love the product.

My number #1 wish is for overlay icons like dropbox (getdropbox.com) uses for the file sync. Until now I haven't figured out how to see which files are already synced and which ones are pending. Perhaps I'm simply missing something...Tuesday, November 4, 2008 8:31 AM

- not installing program to user folder (or some form of option to install elsewhere)
- if multiple users run live mesh on same pc, not have to reinstall product (see above) and not have to add the device again
- someway to force a sync now
- not run as admin and retain functionality
- remote desktop available to those in remote desktop users group rather than admin's only

I would like to see the mobile client be able to use remote desktop as well. There is already a RDP client for WM but if you are on XP home you wont have RDP on the desktop. Live Mesh on my pc has given me remote desktop capabilities and I would like to see that in the mobile client as well. Thanks.Tuesday, November 4, 2008 11:53 AM

I finally broke down and installed Silverlight.
So I tried out the "Media View" and while it's pretty cool it doesn't have the ability to save files locally from Media View.
It seems kind of pointless to switch to media view so you can find the picture you want and then not be able to simply click a "save as" button.
So, I reccomend a "save as" button in media view.Tuesday, November 4, 2008 8:45 PM -
Following on from Bens suggestion to my post in the main forum, here is a repost into the wish list:
We need better folder options.
The 2 situations below are moving me very close to be able to bypass Activesync all together.
1. Have the folder that my phone camera stores its picture in become a folder on the Mesh.
Now I can do this by adding an existing folder to the Mesh from the phone and it works well. It's just a pity though that when I try and add an existing folder already in the Mesh I am only given the option to either have it on the storage care or the main memory (in a folder called Livefolders). The ability to choose an exact folder would make life better.
2. Sync my Favorites between desktop and phone.
But on Windows Mobile, Favotires is in the Windows directory and you can't get to that within Live Mesh no matter what you do.
So I can understand why you might want to block the Windows directory but perhaps there is something you can do to allow the Favorites folder to be added?Tuesday, November 4, 2008 10:31 PM -
1. Add any file types. Including .PST .MNY, Access Database Files. User should be able to choose what types should be excluded.
2. Ability to Download a subFolder from Live mesh folder. Now to download all files from a Live Mesh in cloud, either the whole folder has to be sync' ed to the system or have to download each file. (DropBox gives the ability download subfolder as zip file)
3. Ability to have previous versions and Delta Sync. If accidentally deleted in desktop folder can still be recovered from live mesh.
4. Ability to control upload and download speed.
5. Ability to share sub-folder to to other live mesh.
6. Reduced memory footprint and reduced processor usage.
7. Thumbnail for photos, PDF documents, Word Docs, Excel Etc.
8. Locally Access live mesh folders on desktop, in Live Mesh Folders (as a Virtual Drive) , even that are not synced with the machine. The user should be able to view the content of the folder and should be able to save just by copy n paste to local folder. While downloading it may access mesh to download the content from..
I understand Live mesh has great potential. I wish if these above features are part of mesh too.. in future..

I've just been using my computer and noticed that the Mesh notifier was "spinning". I went and opened the notifier and it told me that my machine is uploading 300MB+ of data up into the cloud. Thing is, I don't actually know which folder its being loaded from (actually I do but pretend that I don't for the purposes of this thread).
It would be nice to click on the "Folders" tab of the notifier and see the same progress bar(s) for whichever folder(s) is/are currently uploading/downloading data. Consider that a feature request.

My top suggestions would be
1. support for authenticated proxies -- not necessarily for remote desktop, but even just for file syncing
2. integration with SkyDrive and Office Live3. file versioning
Wednesday, November 5, 2008 7:58 PM -
Mainly:
Linux support, particularly as netbooks are becoming more prevalent (i'm thinking of getting one myself, and mesh would be an ideal oloution for keeping data synced on it).
More sync options on the mobile client, having different settings for different connections such as 3G/GPRS and wifi i.e. I would like an option for mesh to only syc on my home wifi connection and not use the 3G data connection (or reduce the number of syncs).
I realise the WHS and Mesh teams are collaborating on integration at the moment, would it be possible to get a beta verion of an WHS add-in to test?
Also:
+1 file version control
+1 More Live Desktop storage (willing to pay for this would be cool if this could be integrated into my existing hotmail plus subscription)
+1 Having a live mesh "recycle bin"Wednesday, November 5, 2008 9:29 PM -
Currently, signing out of Live Mesh or selecting Work Offline does not prevent file synchronization from occurring, as the user might expect. To be honest, I'm not sure what the point of the Work Offline function or Signing out actually is. I would either like Work Offline/sign out to disable file synchronization, or have a separate option temporarily disabling synchronization.
The reason for this is that there are just times when I need all the bandwidth I can get without interruption, and currently there is no way to ensure this without unplugging the computer from the internet.

Just thought I would add two more slightly off-the-wall wishes/suggestions:
- Mesh on the Zune (and ideally other mp3 players as well), but with an integrated mobile-data connection like the Amazon Iliad. Would have a folder so tracks could be synced on automatically from the live-desktop/WHS or an on-line shop.
- Mesh client for a car system (could be implemented on Windows Automotive?), could sync in music like above but other media as well. Provide a communications hub for voip email etc. as well support for GPS. Could do some other cool things like monitor car status from mesh-enabled mobile (e.g. be alerted if the alarm goes off)
This would be especially cool if Microsoft could do some deal with the mobile carriers in order to somehow charge for mobile bandwidth usage against the users mesh account, as opposed to charging for each device individually. Therefore having one bill, and balancing usage limits over all devices.

Ability to give Remote Desktop permissions to other people.
Eg. I have Mesh installed on my PC with my Live Id. My mom has Mesh installed on her PC with her Live Id.
She calls me up, needs me to fix something. I have to login to Mesh on my PC with her Id to Remote Desktop into her machine. I want to keep logged into my Live Id and just have permissions to Remote Desktop into her machine.
Basically, integration with something like Remote Assistance. Also integration with Shared View would be awesome.

If I want to synchronise a folder to a device that is already in the Mesh here are the steps i take
- go to desktop and double-click on the folder (2 clicks)
- Open the mesh bar (1 click)
- Open 'Synchronized devices' (1 click)
- Click 'Manage' (1 click)
- Click the dropdown for the device in question (1 click)
- Select 'When files are added or modified'
- Click OK
That's 8 clicks which is ridiculously laborious. How much easier would it be if I could right-click on the folder, browse (by pointing) through the context menu to Mesh Folder=>Synchronise folder to...=>"device name"=> 'When files are added or modified' and then click? Answer...MUCH easier. It'd be just like using the SendTo menu that's there today
So, the request is, please put a sub-folder on the right-click context menu that enables me to do some/all of the functions that I ordinarily do on the Mesh bar.
Thanks
Jamie

My Votes:
· SkyDrive Integration
· More Storage - Doesn't have to be a lot, a Gig or two would be nice (best thing would be to have a shared storage with all the other Microsoft services)
· Delta Sync
· More information on what is currently being synced
· Sync Priorities
· Symbian S60 Client
What would also be good is to have a window with detailed sync information and options. So when I hover over the Live Mesh icon the notifier displays with brief details, but when I double click on the Live Mesh icon a proper window opens with the detailed sync info and options tabs.

So I've read all the suggestions and here a mine:
1) Make mesh a VPN client/server. Basically all traffic could be routed peer to peer through your mesh so that you can browse folders and access network devices across your mesh. Also the ability to designate that you want to share your mesh with other machines on your network and have upnp configure your router to direct traffic to your mesh computer for your mesh.
2) Run mesh as a service! If I get an update while I'm away and my computer restarts my mesh for that computer is down. Not good.
3) Allow any app on any computer in your mesh to be added to your mesh desktop. This would be life the remote desktop except just the app windows instead of the whole screen. This is would reduce bandwidth and make the remote desktop feature more usuable on netbooks and non standard devices. Sometimes I just want to access one program to enter something quick but my network connection is flaky. Downloading my whole screen every second and any changes can be a deal breaker.Friday, November 7, 2008 4:18 PM -
Please add the facility to remove mesh folders from the desktop. I tend to like a fairly clear desktop and whilst live mesh is superb my desktop getting all clogged up with blue folders!Friday, November 7, 2008 4:49 PM

Live Mesh can show what files it is up or downloading
For those of us sync huge amounts of data that are changing constantly, Mesh is working way too much. Logs have to be dumped, files have to be identified to purge in order for other files to simply show up on the destination installtion of Mesh.
This seems like a glaring problem, and I am sure everyone at the Mesh Team will have a blast solving it.
If I can provide any user logs or examples to help out, just email me.Friday, November 7, 2008 4:55 PM -
Please get P2P sync working for the Mac client. Like, yesterday... Personally, this is my single biggest wish right now.
Please add SyncToy 'contributor' (e.g., uni-directional) style sync as a folder sync option. I'd like to create an archive folder on a server machine and allow my laptops to contribute new or modified files to that archive folder, but not delete from it when a file is deleted on the laptops.
Perhaps this already exists, but provide an API for developers to create new mesh devices. For example, via something running on Amazon EC2, JungleDisk could offer our encrypted Amazon S3 bucket as a mesh device. Bonus credits for allowing this mesh device API to support P2P sync connections. This would also allow people to implement mesh device integration for other mobile platforms Microsoft does not wish to implement themselves (for example, the Nokia N810).
Need a better status pane for what the sync engine is doing at any given time. Now it shows an 'X of Y' progress meter, but would be nice if it actually showed us what it was working on syncing, and to which mesh devices. Furthermore, if you are looking at a synced folder on your local machine, it needs some way to indicate that it is actually up to date on a folder-by-folder (and more ideally, file-by-file) basis.
The Live Desktop needs a way to make it easier to download multiple items at once. And a list of bookmarks as well would be nice. Live Desktop doesn't really let one interact with their files at this time. It has very primitive viewing capabilities, and at this stage, really only serves as a way to allow us to download files we need when working on a 'foreign' machine (e.g., not our own machine -- say loading a presentation on a shared computer in a conference room). Bookmarks would make it easy to get at commonly used sub-folders or files.
It would be nice if Live Mesh provided a file browser interface that tunneled through the mesh network to our other devices (don't allow it to be shared to other users) to allow us to retrieve any arbitrary file from a mesh device without having to have the file in a synced folder. This would help with those "____, I forgot the {important file}" moments when you are half-way to the airport. And before anyone says "just use the remote desktop feature", understand that that is not always an available option.
From what I can gather, Remote Desktop requires the currently logged in user on the target machine to log out before you can remote in and control it. If so, this is fundamentally broken and invalidates Remote Desktop.

There should be an option to synch all files, regardless of extension. I hate finding out that certain files are excluded because a big brother somewhere decided that things would be better if it was done their way.
By all means exclude certain file types by default if you think it will be a problem with certain users, but always always include an option to give the user ultimate control over how a program is set up.
I've also just discovered that it won't sync files that begin with a tilde (~) in the filename. That's a little annoying. First it was pst and mny files, and now this. Do I have to independently confirm each and every file transfer?
Oh, and it doesn't transfer backup files either. Whose bright idea was that?
Mesh: a great idea that somebody spent hours crippling.

I would like to have some way to know what files are not currently synchronized and to be able to force a synchronization.Monday, November 10, 2008 9:59 PM
-
I'm surprised no one else is requesting this, so I will say it loudly, with bold letters:
How about one-way-sync (read only devices)?
A host of problems could be solved if specific devices could be read-only for a given share. For example, all of the currently "forbidden" file types could be enabled in a one-way sync. This could enable syncing of Outlook pst files and other database-type data. The trick would be to establish that pst and other special files can only be synced to read-only devices. In this case, only one device could be the master, but all devices could read the data.
Personally, I am much less interested in the pst files, and much more interested in maintaining the security and integrity of my data. If one-way syncs were enabled, I could literally share each device's hard drive with every other device, if I really wanted to. I wouldn't dare to this now, because there is too much risk of files being accidentally deleted/modified.
If I have a "mobile photos" folder on my Smart Phone, I might want to sync that folder with 5 or 6 other devices, but I might not want other devices (or worse, a virus or IO error on any one of those devices) to have access to modify or delete these files.
To me, one-way-sync is absolutely crucial and would enable usage scenarios that are risky or not really viable on Mesh today.
Cheers, and thanks for a great product!

Aside from my previous request for one-way sync (read-only devices), my "number two" request would be:
The ability to really view Mesh's sync status.
Current visibility into Mesh's status is nominal at best: we know that something is uploading or downloading, we know aproximately how big of a chunk is being transmitted, and we get an alert if a device is (reportedly) not sync'ing.
Visibility similar to Window's XP's offline folders functionality would be an incredible improvement. For one, it would be great if we could get a simple listing of files with a status like:
- "Synchronized on all devices"
- "Waiting to be downloaded (from _____)"
- "Waiting to be uploaded (to _____)"
- "Uploading to Live Desktop"
- "Uploading via P2P sync"
An added bonus would be the ability to see a log of file deletions (and who deleted them, from with device), since that is a critical risk in a system such as Mesh.
Cheers!
Aaron

(Note: this is more of a bug report than an enhancement request.) Mesh often loses its connection to the cloud (or other PC's) and goes "gray". When this happens, I often have to exit out of Mesh completely and restart the Mesh app, just to get Mesh to back into online mode. It would be great if some kind of "Refresh Status" or "Work Online" option could be added into the systray menu, which would force Mesh to reattempt the server connections. A similar capability to manually refresh remote desktop availability would also be appreciated.
Cheers,
Aaron

I typed this in the Tech Preview Suggestion thread months ago but feel it's worth another mention.
It's purely cosmetic and probably superfluous to a beta programme but the ability to change the icons of devices in the Device Ring would be excellent. For example I've currently got two computers (one desktop & one laptop and two phones (one smartphone & and one PDA) in my Ring. Both computers show up as the same icon as do both phones.
I'd like to be able to change the icon to reflect their laptop and PDA status; just the default ones from within Vista would be nice just as was/is possible within Foldershare/Live Sync. Better yet would be to be able to upload a custom icon or to have the Mesh automatically pick up on any sysc.ico files that may already exsit.
For example, my main phone (HTC Tytn) shows up as the correct T-Mobile variant in WMDC because I placed an icon file called sync.ico in the Windows directory before carrying out the first sync so now when it's plugged in a see my actual phone rather than the default (and really rather ugly!) Vista icon for a PDA. It would be good if the Mesh Client could do a similar thing when adding a new device.- Edited by Dom_Mitchell1 Wednesday, November 12, 2008 2:52 PM To add Foldershare reference

Yes, this point is top important to me. My mesh could not work without authenticated proxy support.
However, why not only say Remote desktop sessions here? File synchronization session need it too.

An essential feature (for me anyway) is allowing subfolders to be added to the mesh. You can't add a folder to the mesh if it's parent is already in the mesh.
For example:
- Possible: I have added My documents to the mesh. It's 40 GB in total and therefore not possible to sync with Live Desktop, but I do want to sync it with my laptop. Fine thus far.
- Not yet possible: I have a subfolder My documents\Visual Studio 2005, it's 75 MB, and I want to sync it only with Live Desktop (it's already implicitly sync'd with my laptop). But I can't add this folder to the mesh since the parent folder is already meshed!
Thanks for this great piece of software! It has drawn my attention back to Microsoft.

I echo the sentiments of everyone who said more visibility into WHAT mesh is actually syncing, and was has not or is waiting to be sync'ed.
Additionally, the News feed is rather confusing. It tells me "29 files have been updated," but doesn't tell me what files nor, more importantly, on what computer. It simply says in folder "Music." Well I have folders named on 3 different computers, all sync'ed. I don't know which one was updated, especially since I typically add new music to the folder from all 3 different computers. Please make the news feed clearer to understand.
Thanks!Friday, November 14, 2008 8:54 PM -
Please provide an option to prevent the automatic creation of Live Mesh folder icons on the desktop of other machines when a new synchronization folder is added to the mesh.
I will never, ever sync a live mesh folder to the desktop of any machine. Period. It's the most stupid and wrong place to put such a folder. Thus, when a synchronization folder gets added to the mesh, I always have to go and remove the stub folder created on each desktop before I can add it where it properly belongs on the system.
Further, I don't need it to show on the desktop as a 'notification' that there is a new synchronization folder available, as I am the one who created it on a different device in the first place. If you really want to provide a notification feature, let the news feed do it's job and perhaps change the icon of the Live Mesh systray application to indicate "new, important news feed item available".
If someone invites you to one of their Live Mesh folders (something I have not yet tried), then I would expect this to be the same: show up in the news feed and not as an icon on every desktop of every device. Otherwise, you have a spam and/or DoS attack against someone using Live Mesh by cranking out invites to live mesh synchronization folders (something which I assume can be automated and made to run continuously via the Live Mesh API for developers).

cwichura said:What I've just now noticed that makes this even more infuriating is that these stub folders on the desktop keep coming back. I have folders I don't necessarily want synced to all machines. I have gone in and double-clicked the stub folder Live Mesh created on the desktop, and selected the synchronization option for "Don't sync with this computer". When you click OK on that, the stub folder is removed from the desktop. However, at some time later, Live Mesh adds these stub folders back to the desktop. This is extremely annoying, as it creates useless clutter on my desktop.

Most important first:
unattended (not logged in, as a service) synchronization.
progress/status visibility ("x out of xxx uptodate" or "xx% complete"); ideally visibility into work queue.
immediate synch on double click (like foldershare) .
more usable conflict resolution - issue description not always clear, support bulk operations.
more visible conflict notifications (not just when folder is opened).
delta sync (what your not doing it !?!?!).
get rid of obstructive fancy UI (large side bars and windows).
ahh ... yes - please don't glue the shared folders I'm not synchronizing with to my desktop

- Performance on Remote Desktop. It is so slow compared to LogMeIn.
- Be able to not have the icon animated, and instead have a different look to indicate it is synking.
- Deduplication across all files so if two files are identical in content the file is only uploaded once.
- Not sure how and if there is a compression before transferring files. If not, it should be added.
- Prioritize selected file(s) to sync. Say a really large file has started to sync and then you want some other files to come in between.

Some remote desktop suggestions:
- better performance (at least matching that of Windows native Remote Desktop service)
- I've noticed with the newest version of Mesh, it effectively disables the secondary monitor on the host computer. It would be nice of Mesh to restore icon and gadget positions after disconnecting as these will be hosed after any monitor/resolution changes. (In fact, if you ever talk to your Windows developer friends, get them to include icon/gadget resolution-dependent location saving into Windows 7! A feature that's been sorely missing for years.
- It would also be nice if Mesh is going to be altering the hosts display confiuration anyway, if it would match the client's resolution so you can at least go fullscreen without having to scroll or resize.
- Provide some means to keep the aspect ratio of the remote desktop window correct. It can be sized freely into any shape and there is no way to restrict it to the remote desktop's correct aspect ratio or reset the aspect ratio. This can highly distort the remote desktop
- I'd much rather than arbitrarily resizing the remote desktop if there was some control over this on the client side: keep remote desktop as is, disable all but primary display, resize to <specified resolution>, resize to client resolution.
- Along with this it would be nice if there was an interactive zoom slider so on the client side you can zoom in or out as appropriate for the current task. This could also include a zoom-marque tool so you can draw the area of the remote desktop you want to see in your current window. Ideally get rid of the blue status-bar thing at the top of the screen which is annoying and replace it with a floating toolbar with all the functions you might need, including the zoom functions. There could also be a thumbnail of the whole remote desktop so you can easily scroll to any part by moving a representative square ont he thumbnail. What would really make this over the top is if you could slide out a magnifying glass from this floating toolbar so you could have a Windows magnifier-like functionality so you can be zoomed out to various levels but still see a full sized display under the cursor.
- a Firefox plugin for remote desktop through the live desktop or a portable remote desktop client that you could download from the live desktop page.

12. Wake-on-LAN capability in Live Mesh
Without this, the remote access features are not really that useful - I don't want to have to leave my home PCs switched on permanently on the off-chance that I may want to access them remotely occassionally.Wednesday, November 19, 2008 1:18 PM -
I think this is a reitteration of your 3rd "top" suggestion, but...
I'm doing development work with subversion as a back end and I sync my work and home pc's. For this to work, I have to sync (usually) hidden .svn folders between the two PC's, otherwise I can't update and submit properly. I've gotten around this for now by liberal use of attrib -h, but it is a pain because I have to do this each time a new folder is added. I'm sure there's some reason for hidden file/folder syncing being off by default (I'm not sure what that would be, but I'm sure there is), however it would seem extremely limiting not to allow this to be configurable. I know of a number of programs that store necessary metadata in hidden files. I'm all for not syncing office temporary files, but a blind exclusion of all hidden files seems, well, blind.
Also, it sure would be nice to be able to have include and exclude filters in general. Something as simple as a "Sync All Folders" or "Sync Selected Folders" option would be okay, however, an advanced, pattern/wildcard based exclude mechanism would be wonderful. This would especially be nice for developers again. I don't want to sync my build directories any more than I want to version them. Something like the svn:ignore property...
And just a bug'ish note on the obj and bin build folders, I have LOTS of conflicts when I'm syncing these folders. I shouldn't really since there's lots of time between building on one machine and building on another--plenty of time for the changes to sync it would seem. I had this problem occasionally but far less frequently with FolderShare and usually it made sense (FolderShare or internet connection down somewhere causing changes not to sync prior to new builds taking place). With Mesh, it doesn't always make sense.

I am sitting here with a very sad, grayed out Live Mesh icon looking back at me. All it reports is that it is "Unable to connect to Live Mesh." and "Please check your network connectivity." I would like to know why it cannot connect. I can access my system from any of my remote locations without a problem. Why does this installation think it cannot connect? I would like to see some type of connectivity diagnostic feature added to Live Mesh.
PS: I have logged off and back on, I have exited and restarted, I have logged on to Live Mesh Desktop with IE and Firefox and everything is working on this system. But somehow, someway the Live Mesh program is of the opinion that it cannot get on-line. I'd like to know why it is of that opinion.

Hello, there is a list of features I'd love to see on Live Mesh:
(1) Integration with Office live workspace (and possibly SkyDrive but I think that live mesh can superseed the skydrive in most ways)
(2) DeltaSync protocol for faster integration
(3) Ability to easily share separate files, e.g. I wanna say: "I want to make readonly or full access share with this person who,
(a) has Live ID - so he just have to log with his Live ID
(b) doesnt have live ID - so I enter a password for access to the file" and it will make me a links for access to the file or folder which I can send to my friend/colleague
(4) Ability to more precise control the Remote Live Desktop - I want to be able to deativate it easily, deactivate it on individual PCs, set that in order to control some PC with Remote Live Desktop the user has to enter the password for some account on that PC (it would be the best f I could grant this right to individual users/groups)
(5) Linux client
(6) More storage space (for some reasonable price)
(7) Would it be possible to host the webinterface on my own server (for performance and security reasons) ?
Thanks for the great application, this is something I was looking for for a long time :)

Hi,
I'm using Mesh both as a sync service and (partly) as a backup. So, the features that would help a great deal are (a vote for already mentioned ones):
- Better support for occasionally connected devices (perform sync right after connecting to the online service);
- More control over what gets synchronized and when. Manual sync - this, along with file versioning, is a full backup feature. Sometimes I only want to sync one folder, or one folder/file first, then all the rest afterward.
- Delta transfers - saves a great deal of bandwidth, yada yada. This is a must for large files that change only a little bit at a time.
- More verbose monitoring of what is going on - the geeky stuff. I'd like to see the queue, status of folders/files, etc. Something that would help you, developers, identify what's going on and save your life could save mine, as well. :)
Cheers

I'm getting this as of late, too. First I thought it was a network problem.
Remote Desktop remains accessible but synchronization stops. Restarting mesh client or logging on and off does not help. Only restarting the computer helps.Wednesday, November 26, 2008 4:09 AM -
How safe is the Remote Desktop connection? Prior to logging in to my remote machine, are we fairly certain that access is limited to only those in my mesh?
The reason being is this idea: Add some way to remotely reboot the device WITHOUT having to log in first. Yesterday, I connected from work to my Vista Home Premium machine at home. I got the log in screen OK, except that there was an error dialog on my home machine, too. There was a "Try Again", "Cancel" and "Ignore" button, I think, but no matter what I did, including entering my id into the sign-in space (it let me do that), I'd always get disconnected when I pressed Enter. I tried the different buttons on the dialog, I tried entering my userid and using the mouse to press the blue arrow button, but I was always kicked off.
Once I got home, I could log into the machine properly, and I restarted it. But if I'd needed to get at something on that machine, I'd have been really hosed.
So I suggest adding some sort of remote restart capability to handle these sorts of cases. Assuming, of course, that this could be reasonably secure.Wednesday, November 26, 2008 6:17 PM -
I'd like to see an option to synchronise files over a LAN only for those of us that want to synchronise large amounts of files, and don't have a high-speed connection with a huge download limit.
So for example, my photos synchronise between my notebook and my desktop (when they are connected to the same network) without going through the internet - it would be faster and much less costly for me.Sunday, November 30, 2008 1:16 PM -
Most important for me: Delta sync of course.
It would greatly decrease the network load for me, and the mesh servers of course ;)Sunday, November 30, 2008 1:33 PM -

Regarding the CPU usage, this is also a concern of mine. My 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo seems to handle it relatively ok, although making enough changes in a Live Mesh Folder will cause the (laptop) fan to run. However, on my old PC, a 1.8 GHz Athlon XP-M, Live Mesh's HD and CPU usage during the first 5-10 minutes of start-up render the computer nearly useless.Wednesday, December 3, 2008 7:58 PM -

I like this idea, maybe the folder on the remote device would have thumbnails or some sort of place holder, and then only download the most recent version of the file when clicked on.
Also, +1 for all the top ideas. They are all things that I would like to see.
I especially would like to see 1 way syncs, so I can choose a master device and read only devices. I have a home pc where everyone uses the same user ID to log in. I've tried to change them, but get the whine of 'it takes to long to log out and back in" or some such excuse. Not to mention, when I am not there, I can't enforce it.
Second idea I really like is the ability to send a 'remote desktop' invitation to someone else. Like many others here, I do support for most of my family. I would like to be able to remote in without having to add their computer to my mesh.
Third idea is one I have seen in the forums before but not in this current thread. I would like the ability to use a sperate session when I log into my home pc remotely. This is one that the media center community has been asking for for quite a while. That way, if my family is on the pc at home, and I need to access remotely, I can get in without disturbing them. Give me the option when I remote in with a popup that says something like "billy-joe-bob is logged in, do you want to interrupt their session or start a new session?"
I'm sure there are other ideas I can come up with and add as we go along, thanks for listening.

1) Move the local folders. I am setup with a smallish C: drive and the mesh synch just filled up my C: drive. I'd like to move all of the to D:\Mesh (or something similar). The same way you can move your My Documents directory.
2) One way synch - I'd like to mark a folder for an outbound only synch. I know that it is my source directory and I would never drop a file on another computer expecting it to show up in my source directory. For instance: Computer A (Work), Computer B (Home). There are certain documents I create or downloads, etc I want to have available at home. I want to mark that directory on my work computer as an outbound synch. Every other device setup to synch would get new files on the Work machine but the Work machine would *not* get new files in that directory on my Home machine.

One thing Foldershare does that I would need to consider switching to Mesh is syncing hidden files. Some of the programs I use, like Picasa, hide settings in hidden files and it really ramps up the functionality of Picasa when my settings along with me pictures are sycned from Machine to Machine. I get this functionality with Foldershare, but not with Mesh, but I'd like to see it. I don't think it would be too difficult at all to add hidden file support.
Also, I can't think of any reason why .pst files wouldn't be synched. Foldeshare will sych them, seems silly to have Mesh not.

Some quick questions first:
1. Do you mean the opportunity to set specific passwords per folder?
2. Would these passwords be asked for when anyone accessed the folder on the machine, live desktop or only when attempting to share the folder (i.e. sync it to their account)?
3. Doesn't the option to share a folder cover your needs by allowing you to choose who can see the folder and what access they have?
------
Thanks for your help!
1. Do you mean the opportunity to set specific passwords per folder?
Leo: Not each folder. It is a option for user.
2. Would these passwords be asked for when anyone accessed the folder on the machine, live desktop or only when attempting to share the folder (i.e. sync it to their account)?
Leo: Control to who can access the folder when public computer.
3. Doesn't the option to share a folder cover your needs by allowing you to choose who can see the folder and what access they have?
Leo: Yes. I see. This function for publice computer user only.

Authenticated Proxy Support PLEASE! We recomment ISA server as a baseline to our clients, then we have to explain why the cool new Microsoft software(LiveMesh) doesn't work with the Microsoft software we sold and implemented. Please, toss the Partners a bone on this!!!!!
Next up is Delta Syncing. We have a large installed base using AirCards and with the curent 5GB caps, full syncs become a real issue.
Thanks!Wednesday, December 10, 2008 3:26 AM -

I disagree about the times. I often update a file multiple times during the day and sometimes it is helpful to me to know if an update at a certain time occurred in the Live Mesh folder.Wednesday, December 10, 2008 4:00 AM -
Need to add support for Right-Shift combination when using Remote Desktop to another machine from a machine that you are connected to via Live Mesh. The lack of support for Right-Shift is very frustrating for someone who is used to typing properly.Wednesday, December 10, 2008 2:38 PM

I agree with this post. It would be very deisrable to sync Favorites over the air between my PC and phone. I have the Create Mobile Favorites button on my Live toolbar that lets me add favorites to my Mobile group but Mesh on my Phone will not let me sync the \windows\favorites folder.
Thanks for this consideration.

I want to second the wish for the date (in addition or instead of the time) in the "Older" section of the news. Right now it essentiall tells me that something happenend at "5 p.m. more than a week ago" but doesn't say on which date. We may not need the date in those sections that have a date, but in the section with the headline "Older".

Letting Mesh remember my e-mail and password, should not mean that my other Microsoft Live applications should have the same settings.
Personally I would like to keep the setting for the different Live applications seperate.
Currently, when i tell Mesh to remember my password it does that in Messenger as well.Sunday, December 14, 2008 12:15 AM -
I have 3 PCs synching multiple folders with each other. When I have all 3 connected to the same LAN behind the same router, I would expect the servers to synch directly with each other at the LAN speeds (over my 1Gb switch) but, based on the observed performance, the synchronization occurs over the cloud facing router.
Would it not make sense to have each of the participating PCs try to attempt to communicate with each other directly using their "real" addresses even if they are behind a router? It seems simple enough to try each other's address and, if the responder is the right one, proceed with P2P sync. This would reduce the synchronization time.Sunday, December 14, 2008 8:10 AM -
A feature request i'd love to see implemented when available, is integration with Office online. So when you'd click on a document in a Mesh folder, it would open in Office Live (?) and then allow for editing through the web service. Although the web version office is not yet dated, it would be great to already see work towards this implementation.
Another feature that would be handy for whomever would need it, is a RSS feed of the News on the folders, perhaps a passworded one. Why? Because it can be implemented, that's why.Sunday, December 14, 2008 5:09 PM -
I'd like to turn of the "transparent" folder shortcuts that get created on my (device) desktop for each new folder in the Mesh. It clutters my desktop and I don't need them. If I want to start syncing a folder with my computer I can easily find the list of mesh folders from the Live Mesh notification icon.
I know I can simply delete those icons but it would be better not to create them in the first place (as an optional setting - I see how they make sense for users new to Live Mesh)

Why not use the "Sync Center" in Vista to manage the sync relationship? This seems logical, fits with the OS features, and I believe is better than adding yet another icon to the taskbar.
Tuesday, December 16, 2008 4:12 PM -
I believe that once you click a folder link on the desktop and tell Live Mesh not to sync the folder the link should go away permanently. Currently you can tell a folder not to sync with a particular PC, and you are continually re-prompted to sync. I don't like the desktop clutter! :-)
Tuesday, December 16, 2008 4:19 PM -
Small issue, but it would be helpful I think. When you are looking at your Live Desktop, the folders should have information on how large they are, so that you can better manage your 5GB of cloud storage.
Perhaps with a graphical representation of what syncing/unsyncing a specific folder will do to your total storage?

Thanks for this ultimately cool experience, it is some exciting innovation.
My wish list:Ability to see and copy (for e.g. email or a shortcut) a hyperlink that points straight into a folder on my Live Desktop, instead of having to navigate into and out of folders by clicking on folder icons. I got so used to having the full path in the address bar in Windows, and to being able to click on the " foldername > foldername" in Vista to get the full path resolved as e.g. "c:\my documents\foldername\foldername", that I really expect to have it in Mesh as well - it feels like it's an extension of my Vista machine so I want it to be seamless. When my shared folders get more members and content, I'm going to want a tree view as well, because I can't see into the parent folders and may not remember where certain folders and files have been put. (Maybe you'll be adding Search one day :)
Support for linking between docs within the same folder. For example, I have a number of Excel spreadsheets with a list of links in them to e.g. .doc files. When I copy all these files together into a folder on a server share the hyper links work fine. When I copy them to a folder on Mesh the hyperlinks do not work. I think this would work if I accessed the files from the sync'd folder on my computer, but I don't want to have to sync with my computer, I want to work with and store the files on the Live Desktop.
Ability to see who has owner permissions on a folder. We had a few cases with folders that had a lot of members where we didn't know who had the owner permissions - this was an obstacle to getting other members invited to the folder.
Ability to edit and save the file on the Live Desktop (and until then, user message that this is not supported yet .. currently throws some interesting error messages if you try it -- and lets you close without saving changes without the usual 'want to save before closing?' message)
Ability to copy a shortcut onto the Live desktop.
Ability to upload or drag-and-drop a folder with files in it onto the Live Desktop. Right now, upload only supports an individual file.
Ability to upload or drag-and-drop multiple files. Right now, upload only supports an individual file.
Ability to delete a folder on the Live Desktop.
Ability to close and reopen the information pane on the right-hand side of the desktop folder, e.g. with << and >> buttons.
Recycle folder for deleted files.Thursday, December 18, 2008 7:55 PM -
I don't think this is high priority, but on my home computer, I have the taskbar set on the top of the screen. Consequently, when I log into that computer remotely via Live Mesh, the blue maximize/minimize bar obscures my taskbar and tray.It would be nice in those situations if the remote desktop program was smart enough to put it on the bottom of the window, or make it draggable/hideable, or something.btw, the UI in general is very nice, clean and simple but functional.Tuesday, December 23, 2008 6:18 AM

Nice job, guys. Thanks! My suggestions, in order of importance to me are...
- Outlook .pst sync (on a folder-by-folder basis so that I can sync my calendar and tasks but not necessarily emails and using a delta sync model so it is quick)
- More space. Perhaps allow me to integrate the space with the unused 25 GB you've given me on Skydrive, or just to give up that and use it here.
- Please give us an option to have the notifier start up minimized. Given that the program does most of its work without my direct attention, that's really irritating.
- Allow me to have a nested heirarchy on the desktop to that I can maintain the same folder structure on the desktop as on my computers. That is, if I have a folder c:\users\me\documents\stuff\topic1 and c:\users\me\documents\stuff\topic2, and I only want to sync topic2, then let me recreate \documents\stuff\topic2 in my mesh rather than having topic2 be a top-level folder.
- One-way sync for all the reasons already said by others.
- Delta sync for all the reasons already said by others.
- Status of files during sync. I especially like the idea of making the folders a different color if the entire folder is up-to-date than if it if syncing or waiting to sync.
- The ability to include/exclude file types, including the ability to override the defaults that have been arbitrarily set.
- Skydrive becomes rather meaningless relative to this, if you just add some of the features suggested in this thread (like one-way sync), so why not merge the two into a single product?

Add more options to control sync of an individual file or folder. For exampe: read only, read/write, delete. It would be nice if you could limit what a remote can do. My suggestions:
Merge skydrive, Mesh, Office Live + office 14, hotmail's storage and up storage to 50 gig
because with all the variuos services combined it probably can get up to that large
Mesh has all the features of skydrive, so mesh should replace skydrive, but retain skydrive storage amount, and the preview and tagging options which don't require silverlight or Flash. Also, users should be able to edit or at least view files from within the browser with an integration of the office 14 online features.
There are so many microsoft windows live services that have overlapping uses. live sync and live mesh are one example. skydrive and live mesh is another.Monday, January 12, 2009 1:59 AM -

Oh wow,
I really really love live mesh. USB sticks/drives are from the past!
Some things i was hoping for:
4. Ability to sync Outlook .pst files <--- for now the beste one
5. Increased storage space on the Live Desktop
6. Some form of file versioning where Live Mesh will keep older copies of edited files, and give you the ability to restore those older versions should you want to.
12. Wake-on-LAN capability in Live Mesh, so that it can wake your computers remotely
And, what would be a cool feature too is a function to work on a dingle docx. at the same time with more users. (a la google docs but then in word itself.)
Other things on where i vote for :-)

I would love to see the current Live Mesh control panel integrated better into the shell. While I love the service, I would love the ability to collapse/hide the folder settings. Since this seems to have come up a couple of times, would it be possible to add more flexibility to the syncing location once the folder is already synced to a device?
Would be awesome to be able to just move the folder around and have it still work, or at least be able to (via a client command) move the folder so that sync followed it.

My 2 cents.
- Blackberry support.
- Meshing Mesh with Silverlight. It would be cool to be able to write a program that uses the mesh, in one language say c# and have it run on any device that supports mesh. Silverlight is kind of half way there. If sliverlight gets expanded to run on my blackberry browser, and other browsers in other phones then I could write a silverlight/mesh app that could run on any device that has a browser. I would not need to write different apps for different devices.

I had quite a few sync conflicts and I still havn't managed them all, because of the one-conflict-at-a-time dialog box, which is tiring and gives no sense of how much conflicts are left (all I know is: more than 50).
I would suggest a dialog with a list of all conflicts and simple abilities to select many (select by path, pattern, keyword, etc.), and handle them the same. In one sentence: a "Multiple/many conflict/s management dialog".Saturday, January 17, 2009 10:23 AM -

It would be nice to have an *option* to automatically disable the screensaver on the remote desktop while connected, and re-enable it when the connection is closed. Hi,
first of all I'm pretty happy with the performance improvements in build 0.9.3424.14.
These are the gripes & issues I've still got with the software. Focusing especially on Remote Desktop:
- ability to bypass the 30-second timeout (through GUI, or even if that means using a registry setting on each client). The timeout is an absolute pain, especially when you're connecting to your own computers
- do something about the "side panel" to the right of the remote desktop window. It's absolutely horrible, doesn't resize properly and/or resets itself to its default size seemingly at random. The useful buttons that are present in that panel (e.g. hide / show remote desktop) should appear in some floating toolbar or in the remote desktop window's title bar somewhere. This "side panel" is way too large and quite annoying. At the very least, a user should be able to turn it off, and it should "remember" this setting. Also, the "show / hide remote desktop" setting should be remembered.Sunday, January 18, 2009 10:31 PM -

just in case my votes aren't registered for the following (no particular order):
1. "Historical View" (backup / restore) - I see this as being integral to the success of the Live Mesh file sync platform (as opposed to the apps part - which has other success arcs, but will benefit from this as well). It would be awesome if differential chunks were saved between file versions, allowing me to travel back in time to a certain snapshot. I realise this is moving to something git-like and will enlarge disk space required per mesh, but I know that I would be willing to pay for the extra disk space (especially if I could manage and delete specific revisions to free things up).
2. More advanced news service - I realise that messaging etc will mostly be better served by apps, but it would be awesome if the news was more comprehensive, searchable and had dates, instead of just the times which are pretty much useless right now ("the file was modified at 7:32am sometime in the past" - not very helpful :( ).
3. Specification of sync folder from a remote machine (instead of the default Desktop), or at least the ability to specify a different default
4. the ability to move folders around once synced, either natively via normal windows / dos commands or via a mesh ui
5. integration into server apps, including server core
6. programmable interface to control ui via powershell (I'm happy to write this as a powershell extension! I've browsed through the different objects in the dlls - no disassembling, I promise - and some things look promising, but I haven't got the time right now to do any proper testing, would love the opportunity to properly sink my teeth into this)
7. Control and restriction of Live Mesh via Group Policy
8. Option to install Live Mesh as a system wide service (or services) that will continue sync even if the user is not logged in (useful for continuing sync if the computer reboots)
9. Finer grained control over the remote desktop feature, including help to ensure a faster connection that cuts down on proxying and the enabling / disabling of the "accept" dialog
10. transport settings - i.e settings that define when and how live mesh will sync with the network. Especially for people in internet quota'ed contries who also have off peak and on peak traffic quotas (yup, these restrictions still exist around the world) would be awesome to configure Mesh to only do large updates (say > 10mb or > 1gb etc) during off peak times and even then, to throttle upload / download speeds.
11. Finer grained controls over how a folder syncs - ignore specific files, specific subfolders etc, this is a must for people who will ever want to sync frequently changing directories, such as Visual Studio projects (would be great to exclude temporary files and bin directories etc)
That's enough from me for today... comments are welcome though!

My suggestions:
- Version Control ability on Live Desktop and Clients
Alot like the "Restore previous versions" method on Vista and Windows 7's backup service.
Let the user decide how much space will be available for the Version Control folder.
Example: My "My Computer" device has a Live Mesh folder called Documents.
I've set the options Version Control Limit to 5GB in the Live Mesh options for my Documents folder locally on my client.
Live Mesh will now use this space to preserve old versions of all the files in the folder and give me a easy interface to interact with the old files. - Advance Options for local folders
- Only include files with the following format: ".doc, .docx, .xls"
- Ignore files with the following format: ".exe, .msi"
- Ignore these subfolders (List of folders inside the Live Mesh Folder and the ability to add new ones.
Example: I've got all my Pictures shared on Live Mesh, but I might want to ignore my Pictures\Raws folder that containt raw files. - Run Live Mesh as a service

In a different thread I asked if there was functionality available in Mesh similar or the same as rss feed functionality, which would allow me to be notified that there was a change to the file/folder makeup on my linked devices. This would benefit those of us who are not at one of our linked devices, or are but no paying attention to the interface, in that we would receive notification in some form. I was told there wasn't and I should add it to this sticky. Thus, my post...Thursday, January 22, 2009 6:36 PM

I vote for:-
3) More fine-grained control over which files and folders Live Mesh syncs, and where
On the Mobile Mesh client.
Right now, if you have an existing folder in the Mesh, and you want to sync/add it to your Windows Mobile device, you cannot select where you want the synced folder to be, it MUST be /Live Folders/ (either in Main memory or Memory card).
This is especially annoying, if you have a folder called /pics/ and you want to sync this folder with your Live Mesh folder also called "pics". What happens is that you end up having:
/pics/
/Live Folder/pics/
and you have no way to merge them together.
The only way (and stupid/redundant in my mind), is to use the Mobile Mesh client, share the /pics/ folder (which ends up having 2 pics folders in the Mesh) and copy over the files from one pics folder to the other pics folder using a PC Mesh client.
All that needs to be done, is for the Mobile Mesh client to simply ask you where you want to sync a particular Mesh folder. Seems relatively simple.
Hopefully this option can be added to the next version/update!

In my opinion, the restrictions on hidden files (including files that begin with a period) and file extensions need to go.
I love Live Mesh, but I have to resort to using Live Sync to synchronize my Documents folder because my work (and play) has hidden files (and files that begin with a period like .htaccess files) and .SAV files that aren't synced onto my laptop through Mesh.
Once these restrictions are gone, I would love to be able to just use Mesh for all my syncing needs.
