Play Games stored in ISO on Windows Home Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello I have put my orignal copies of my games in ISO, and I want to store them on the windows Home Server, will I still be able to install them on my vista or xp machine, and play them from there, or will I need to pull the ISO to the vista/Xp machine to play or install.

  • virtually all of my software has been ripped to .iso's for easy access on the server and also to make sure the original media never gets damaged/scratched.

I have been using daemon-tools to "mount" these images when needed for years and years. daemon tools is a "virtual" dvd rom drive that will create a drive letter in windows and behave like a real optical drive. it is so much faster loading from virtual hard drive compared to optical.

here is where you can get daemon tools (its free) be very, very careful when installing, because it wants you to agree to install search toolbars and other junk, but you can deselect the extra junk. do not just hit next-next-next.....

    heres the webpage:

    http://www.daemon-tools.cc/

heres the "lite" version I reccommend:
    http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php?mode=Download&id=34

    hope this helps

  • As long as you can mount the ISO image they can be pretty much anywhere. I would think that performance would not be as good as if they were local, but give it a try with one and see how you get on.

  • Considering most new games only use the cd for copyright protection, I think it would be fine.  Performance might vary depending if the game ever accesses the cd (iso).  Older games that read from the cd more often might have more of an issue with this.
