  • Hello mod.addicted,

Thank you for posting your Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool information. We are sorry to hear about the situation you are currently experiencing. The diagnostic results help our team in determining the root cause of your issue.

The Windows XP Product Key installed on this computer was not assigned by Microsoft. The Product Key is counterfeit and was most likely generated by a Product Key generator. The Product Key found on your computer has been detected on multiple computers. Product keys are only allowed to be used on one computer unless otherwise specified in the End User Licensing Agreement (EULA).   You will find numerous sites where this Product Key has been posted.  Use your favorite search engine and paste in the Product Key.

There are situations which can cause Windows XP to become non-genuine. Let me give one example.  Customers have taken in their systems for service along with all the software received when purchasing their system. The customer picks up the system and viola’ no problems whatsoever until they need to download an update. Suddenly their system is non-genuine. The customer's computer was not installed with their software but either a blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) or a Keygen’d Product Key. Also the software could work for several weeks, months, or even a year or more then suddenly become blocked.

This is why you may be seeing the "Software Counterfeiting" messages on your computer. You will need to uninstall Windows XP  before any further complications occur from being non-genuine.

Under NO circumstances should someone try to download/distribute ISO images for software from a P2P file sharing site or use a second-hand burned copies of software. Research has shown that about half of the software copies available on P2P download sites are infected with root kits, spyware, Trojans, and other potentially harmful malware. One file in particular was very alarming.  This file was an administrator account giving the attacker full control over both your system and data.  I would be very concerned about your system integrity because Windows is non-genuine.

As a customer there are several options available for you to get to a “Genuine” status. For details on the ways to get “Genuine”, see the web page that outlined your validation failure details. It will provide all of the possible steps which you can take. Here is the link:

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine

If this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the computer or operating system and let them know the operating system is a counterfeit copy.  Request they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy.

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is here to help protect YOU, our valued customer. It is important for more people like you, who have become victims, to report piracy at the following link:

    http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/reporting/default.aspx

Microsoft legal will follow up on all leads provided.  Submitting piracy reports will assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices.  You may be eligible for free software if you have high quality counterfeit discs.

Again, we are sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise off-load any data from the hard disk because a clean installation/re-imaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive.

Thank you for visiting the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program forum.

  • Hello mod.addicted,

In order to receive the best support, we request all users to initially run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool.  This will try and identify the individual issue you may be experiencing.  Please provide a brief synopsis describing your customer scenario, including any dialogue, error messages, or codes. Error codes can be found in the lower left hand corner of most Genuine Advantage Web pages when an error is encountered.

By clicking the link below, you will download the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (MGADT). Then click the Run button. Then click the Run button again. Then click the Continue button to perform the diagnostic. The Windows tab should show, click the Copy button to paste your report to the clipboard.  Then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum by adding a post in it and pressing Ctrl V (to paste the text). Clicking the OK button will clear the Diagnostic window. Here is the download link:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

Please tell us about the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) for your copy of Windows XP.

    1. What edition/version of Windows XP is titled?

    ·         Home

    ·         Professional

    ·         Media Center

    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4. Please provide the customer scenario you are experiencing.

    5. DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for, see this page to reference your COA:

    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/product.aspx?pID=2abf99cd-a5e4-469c-802e-55ca8ec542d5&cID=ea710cad-37b0-4975-bcd6-abfee19961df&method=oem&displaylang=en

NOTE: The data collected with the MGADT does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you. The information can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

Thank you for your participation here on the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program forums. We look forward to working with you.

  • Mod.addicted,

The copy of XP Pro now installed on your Compaq Presario C700 computer is a Volume Licensing edition of XP Pro and it was installed with a nongenuine "keygen" Product Key.

The copy of Office 2003 Pro now installed on your Compaq is also a nongenuine installation of a Volume Licensing license for Office 2003 Pro.  Please uninstall this installation of Office as soon as possible.

You mentioned earlier in the thread that your computer came with Windows Vista preinstalled and you wanted to use XP instead, so you installed what has now been identified as a piared copy of XP.

Please be advised that the End User Licensing Agreement for your OEM license for Vista does allow "downgrade rights" to install XP Pro, as long as the Vista that came preinstalled on your Compaq was either Vista Business or Vista Ultimate.

This document describes downgrade rights:  http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/8/6/2860872a-35dc-4a10-8617-3927aacd189a/downgradeOEMversion-020707.pdf

In order to get this done, first check with Compaq to see if they can send you an XP downgrade rights installation CD.  Again, you must have purchased your Compaq with either Vista Biz or Vista Ult in order to qualify for the downgrade rights.

If Compaq cannot accommodate your request, borrow a genuine hologrammed XP Pro CD from a friend and use it to run setup.  It's preferred to use an XP SP3 installation CD because these do not require the input of a Product Key to run Setup, although in 30 days XP will go into reduced functionality mode if you don't activate it.  If you only have access to an SP2 CD, use it and the Product Key that came with friend's CD to install XP, BUT DO NOT choose to activate online automatically.  Instead, make sure the installation of XP works satisfactorily on the computer.  Then when you are ready to activate, choose to do so telephonically, and choose the option to speak with a live activation representative.  If necessary, search this forum for activation call center phone numbers.  Tell them you are doing a Vista downgrade to XP and they will help you.

Please be sure that you DO NOT activate your friend's license for XP on your computer!  Doing so will invalidate their installation's license.
