Error 0x8004fe22, on Windows 7 Pro. MGA report included. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I run some updates a few days ago and ever since I get error 0x8004fe22 saying my windows 7 copy is not original. Of course my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit is definitely a genuine copy and up-to-date, it came with my Toshiba which I've had for 2 years now.

Coincidentally, ever since I run the updates and every time I get the error my McAfee antivirus stops working. Thank you.

  • Here we go :)

If you don't understand anything please ask!

First create a System Restore point, then....

    Open Regedit
    Navigate to
    HKCR\TypeLib\{565783C6-CB41-11D1-8B02-00600806D9B6}
Right-click on the Key in the left pane, and select Permissions
    Click on the Advanced buton
    Click on the Owner tab
Highlight Administrators, and put a tick in the 'Replace owner on...' box
    Click Apply
(Current Owner should change to Administrators)
    Click OK  - ONCE
    Click on the Permissions tab
In the Permission entries box, highlight Administrators
    click Edit
put a tick in teh Allow /Full Control box (all the other Allow boxes should automatically be ticked)
put a tick in the 'Apply these permissions....' box
    Click OK out to Regedit
    Close Regedit

    Open an Elevated Command Prompt
    run the following command

    C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\regtlibv12.exe C:\Windows\system32\wbem\wbemdisp.tlb

Close the Command prompt if successful - otherwise post the results.

    Open Notepad
copy and paste the following into the Notepad window, and save to the desktop as TEST.VBS

    Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:\\.\root\cimv2")
    Set colComputers = objWMIService.ExecQuery("Select * from Win32_ComputerSystem")
    wscript.echo "Test Passed"

now double-click on the new file - you should get a small popup window saying 'Test Passed'
If you get anything else, copy and paste the message to your reply.

Now reboot and  run a new MGADiag report and post the results.

  • YAY!!!

You are now officially genuine :)

Please run the following command and post the results.

    REG QUERY HKCR\TypeLib\{565783C6-CB41-11D1-8B02-00600806D9B6}

....and then you can give yourself a pat on the back.

Thanks VERY much for staying the course - I've learned a few useful things along the way, and hopefully you have, also?

I'd love to know what removed the original entry in the first place, but it's probably lost in the mists of time by now :(

    Good luck!

To confirm that the problem is what I think it is, please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt window and post the results.

    REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\TypeLib\{EE574957-4077-4AD6-8658-327C2C86C5AA}/S

    REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib\{EE574957-4077-4AD6-8658-327C2C86C5AA}/S

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Windows, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

  • Looks like we found the right place for a fix first time :)

Copy the text enclosed in the box to Notepad, and save as regwowfix.reg

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\TypeLib\{EE574957-4077-4AD6-8658-327C2C86C5AA}]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\TypeLib\{EE574957-4077-4AD6-8658-327C2C86C5AA}\1.0]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\TypeLib\{EE574957-4077-4AD6-8658-327C2C86C5AA}\1.0\0]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\TypeLib\{EE574957-4077-4AD6-8658-327C2C86C5AA}\1.0\0\win32]
    @=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00,74,00,25,\
    00,5c,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,73,00,6c,00,\
    75,00,69,00,2e,00,65,00,78,00,65,00,00,00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\TypeLib\{EE574957-4077-4AD6-8658-327C2C86C5AA}\1.0\FLAGS]
    @="0"

Once saved, close all applications, then right-click on the file and select Merge

You'll get at least one warning - accept it/them.

You should then get a 'Success' message.

    accept that, and reboot.

run another MGADiag report and post the results.

  • Well, we got one of the error messages, at least :)

Now all we have to worry about is the difficult one - for which I have no ready solution :(

Yes, you can delete the .reg file now - you shouldn't need it again.

Please run the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your public SkyDrive so I can take a look.

The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and will exit silently - it may appear to freeze for
most of that time, but be patient.

  • Hope this is what you need... CheckSUR log

    Sunday, August 26, 2012 3:19 AM
  • Yep - unfortunately, it tells us nothing, since it apparently found no errors.

We'll need to start back at the basics, in that case....

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

     At the Command prompt, type

     CHKDSK C: /R

     and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,

and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size  of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally  (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

     At the Command prompt, type

     SFC /SCANNOW

     and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Post an MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

  • The Library Not Registered error refers to the line in vbs which accesses the Scripting.Dictionary resource

let's see if re-registering the dlls involved helps at all.

Open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and copy/paste the following commands into it - you should get 'success' messages for each one, in the form of popup boxes

    %systemroot%\system32\regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\vbscript.dll
    %systemroot%\system32\regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\jscript.dll
    %systemroot%\system32\regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\dispex.dll
    %systemroot%\system32\regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\scrobj.dll
    %systemroot%\system32\regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\scrrun.dll

once complete, reboot and post a new MGADiag report.

  • We have at least got part of the way there!

The error message has changed again.

    Licensing Data-->
En un equipo que ejecute una edición de Microsoft Windows distinta de Core Edition, ejecute 'slui.exe 0x2a 0x8002801D' para mostrar el texto de error.
    Error: 0x8002801D

which interestingly translates as 'library not registered'!!

So - lets see if the same problem is involved elsewhere

    %systemroot%\sysWOW64\regsvr32 %systemroot%\sysWOW64\vbscript.dll
    %systemroot%\sysWOW64\regsvr32 %systemroot%\sysWOW64\jscript.dll

    %systemroot%\sysWOW64\regsvr32 %systemroot%\sysWOW64\scrobj.dll
    %systemroot%\sysWOW64\regsvr32 %systemroot%\sysWOW64\scrrun.dll

again, please reboot, and run another MGADiag report.

    Set g_resourceDictionary = CreateObject("Scripting.Dictionary")
msgbox "Switch to Procmon and click File menu and untick Capture Events"

(thanks to David Candy for this!)

Download Process Monitor (procmon) from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645

It doesn't require installation. It's in a zip file and will work anywhere you put it. You can even dbl click it in the zip file.

    Double click Procmon.

The program opens to the Filter dialog. To get back here click Filter menu - Filter...

The filter dialog has four drop down combo boxes or listboxes along the top of the dialog.

Enter the following critera into the drop down combo/listboxes and click the Add button after each line.

    Process Name Contains wscript.exe Include
    Event Class  Is       Registry    Include
Event Class  Is       File System Include
Three rules should have been added to the bottom listbox.   Click the Ok button.

Go to the Filter menu and make sure Drop Filtered Events is ticked.

Double click the test vbs file.

If you have Excel you can sort the data there.

In Procmon click in the Event list, press the Home key, then Shift + End.

Then click the Edit menu then Copy. Switch or start Excel and choose Edit menu then Paste. Go to column G and choose Data menu then Sort.

Don't post the whole output here. It's too big.

Click File menu then Save. Choose Comma Seperated Values (CSV).

Upload the saved file to your SkyDrive public folder, and post a link.

I need a fair amount of time to work out what it means, and compare the output with my own

in the meantime, please run the following commands, and post the results.

  • That all looks normal

Let's use a slightly different VBS routine - this will confirm that what we think is going wrong is actually happening.

Please  save the folllowing as 'testvbs2.vbs' to your desktop

    on error resume next
msgbox "Start Procmon then press Ok"
    Set g_resourceDictionary = CreateObject("Scripting.Dictionary")
    msgbox err.number & vbtab & err.description
msgbox "Switch to Procmon and click File menu and untick Capture Events"

The double-click on the file, and follow the instructions - upload the resulting ProcMon data again and we'll take another look

Please also tell us the exact error messages you get (if any) when you click 'OK'

  • ok, when double clicking the file first I get a window says "0" and has an ok button. When giving OK then I get another one that says "Swith to ProcMon and click File menu and untick Capture Events" and has an ok button. I follow those instructions but results don't seem to change afterwards. that's all, next thing I did was export it to excel, no issues with that.

  • That's what is supposed to happen - it sunds as if there may be a problem with your slmgr.vbs file itself - please upload C:\Windows\system32\slmgr.vbs to your SkyDrive (you may have to compress it first to get past the virus filters) and I'll take a look at it tomorrow (my bed is calling me! <g>)

  • DAvid Candy is of the opinion that we may be looking in the wrong place :) - he thinks the problem may lie with the SLUI.EXE system, rather than the .vbs file (and having now seen the file, I tend to agree)

Let's go back to where we started :)

Please run the following commands, and post the result

    Event Viewer Logs
    Wednesday, September 5, 2012 12:28 AM
  • The above report looks normal - there are a few interesting items in the event logs.

It's going to take me a while but I'll start with this one.....

there is a failing service SBRE, which is apparently usually a part of Sunbelt Software's anti-rootkit stuff (Vipre AV, etc).

There is a part of Windows Media Player that is faulting - possiblt due to problems with the UPnPHost

Please run the following commands, so we can see what may the the causes.

    SC QC SBRE

    SC QUERYEX SBRE

    SC QC UPNPHOST

    SC QUERYEX UPNPHOST

  • It looks as if for a while, your McAfee (mcagent.exe) was having problems - either because of system corruption issues, (June 5th-10th) or other issues.

You still have a problem with the Toshiba SSD/HDD Alert tool - you should uninstall it, and reinstall the latest available from their website.

Please run the following commands (separately from the ones above - they may overflow the buffer) and post the results.

    REG QUERY HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer /s
    SC QC EVENTSYSTEM
    SC QUERYEX EVENTSYSTEM
    SC QC VSS
    SC QUERYEX VSS
    VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS

  • OK -that's not made any difference :(

let's see how much of the VSS system is working whern it does get properly switched on.....

    NET START VSS

    VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS

(When we ran the admin command earlier, the service wasn't running, which is why it came back blank - but I would have expected it to be able to start the service as required - so there may be a hang somewhere)

  • I need to think about this one - it seems that all the writers have been uninstalled.

It's too late for it today (I've been in the pub too long!) - I'll get back to you tomorrow.

If you haven't heard anything by this time tomorrow, SHOUT! :)

  • OK - thought about it :)

    Please run the following command

    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vss /S >%userprofile%\Desktop\VSSdump.txt

That will put a file (VSSdump.txt) on your desktop - please upload it to your public SkyDrive, and post a link.

I don't want to try replacing it until I find out what the problem is :)

It looks very small compared to mine - this could take a while :)

  • I've been trying (and failing) to find a resource that will tell me what entries *should* be present, and how they are constructed.

I'm worried that any manual changes that I make here could end up with the system in a worse state than it already is - so I'd rather do nothing at all, and hope that there's something else we can do which will correct it along the may :)

Looking at your Procmon outputs, there appears to be a problem with the file C:\Windows\System32\jscript9.dll

please run the following commands so we can see what's happening (hopefully...)

    DIR C:\Windows\System32\jscript9.* /S

    DIR C:\Windows\SysWOW64\jscript9.* /S

    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\jscript9.*

    ICACLS C:\Windows\SysWOW64\jscript9.*

    ATTRIB C:\Windows\System32\jscript9.*

  • VERY odd!

please run anoother SFC /SCANNOW and copy the new CBS.log file to your deskrop - zip it, and upload it to your skydrive.

reboot, and post a new MGADiag report.

  • OK, i'm on it, just a question... where do I get this CBS.log file?
    Sunday, September 16, 2012 11:33 PM
  • There's a clue on-screen when the SFC scan finishes, as a rule :)

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

It's permanently 'in use' by the system, so you have to copy it elsewhere and play with the copy.

  • That's very odd - explorer says the files don't exist (and according to my systems, they should)

    Please run

    DIR C:\windows\system32\jscript*.* /s

    what results do you get?

  • I've just realised why that file is called jscript9- it's from IE9.

From what I can see in your MGADiag, you are using IE8?? (when you're not using Firefox)

If so, it's a dead end - back to the hunt :)

  • Delving deep, there is a slightly odd entry in the Procmon report.

Please run the following commands and post the results...

    DIR C:\Windows\System32\comctl32.* /s

    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\comctl32.dll

    ATTRIB C:\Windows\System32\comctl32.dll

  • I don't think the IE version has anything to do with your problem.

One possibility we haven't tried - a global registration of all the dll's we can find.

I'd rather do this in sections, so it narrows down the number of dll's I have to test later :)

(more work for you, but less for me<g>) each batch of registrations would require a reboot and a run of slmgr.vbs afterwards before proceeding to the next, if there's been no change in the result.

If you're up for it, I'll see what I can do about creating a set of scripts, and a procedure to follow.

  • Yeah go ahead, let's see what happens :)

  • OK - I'll get moving on it then - it'll probably be tomorrow before it's in a fit state (but may be longer, depending of Real Life!)

  • Just in case I missed something, please run the following commands and reboot, then post a new MGADiag report

    NET STOP WUAUSERV

    NET STOP CRYPTSVC

    regsvr32 scrrun.dll

    NET START CRYPTSVC

    NET START WUAUSERV

You should get a 'success' popup from the regsvr32 command

  • Once you're ready.... ;)

I've uploaded a file to my SkyDrive at https://skydrive.live.com/#cid=936736BB8FCEB92F&id=936736BB8FCEB92F%21485

    'rereg.zip' - it contains 11 text files

    special.txt and common0.txt to common9.txt

Please start with the special.txt file, and follow these instructions.

    Close all other running applications

Open an Elevated Command Prompt window.

Open the file with Notepad and Copy the entire contents (Ctrl+A, then Ctrl+C) and close the file

Paste it into the Command prompt, and hit the Enter key (just to ensure that the last line runs)

It should run without any error or output except for the command entry - and shouldn't take more than a few seconds.

If you get any popups STOP THERE, and make a note, then post back with details.

If you get no error popups, then close the window, and reboot.

Run an MGADiag report and check the Licensing Data area - see if the error message has changed from

    Licensing Data-->
En un equipo que ejecute una edición de Microsoft Windows distinta de Core Edition, ejecute 'slui.exe 0x2a 0x8002801D' para mostrar el texto de error.
    Error: 0x8002801D

If not, then proceed to the next file, and repeat.

If it has changed, then STOP THERE, and post the new MGADiag report.

Go at your own pace - there's no hurry, so far as I'm concerned, and no need to do them all at once!

     - and thanks for being a guinea-pig!

  • I put out a call for assistance - and have a response from MS, but it's not as complete as it should be....

    Hang on in there :)

in the meantime, please run the following command, and post the results.....

    DIR C:\Windows\regtlib*.* /s

  • Good - that's the same as my test rig, so it'll make creating the instrucstions easier.

I'm awaiting a response from MS still - once I get it, I'll get back to you.

  • Here we go :)

If you don't understand anything please ask!

First create a System Restore point, then....

    Open Regedit
    Navigate to
    HKCR\TypeLib\{565783C6-CB41-11D1-8B02-00600806D9B6}
Right-click on the Key in the left pane, and select Permissions
    Click on the Advanced buton
    Click on the Owner tab
Highlight Administrators, and put a tick in the 'Replace owner on...' box
    Click Apply
(Current Owner should change to Administrators)
    Click OK  - ONCE
    Click on the Permissions tab
In the Permission entries box, highlight Administrators
    click Edit
put a tick in teh Allow /Full Control box (all the other Allow boxes should automatically be ticked)
put a tick in the 'Apply these permissions....' box
    Click OK out to Regedit
    Close Regedit

    Open an Elevated Command Prompt
    run the following command

    C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\regtlibv12.exe C:\Windows\system32\wbem\wbemdisp.tlb

Close the Command prompt if successful - otherwise post the results.

    Open Notepad
copy and paste the following into the Notepad window, and save to the desktop as TEST.VBS

    Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:\\.\root\cimv2")
    Set colComputers = objWMIService.ExecQuery("Select * from Win32_ComputerSystem")
    wscript.echo "Test Passed"

now double-click on the new file - you should get a small popup window saying 'Test Passed'
If you get anything else, copy and paste the message to your reply.

Now reboot and  run a new MGADiag report and post the results.

  • Hey... I started by creating the restore point but got an error: error  in the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).  The problem occurred while trying to contact VSS writers. Please verify that the Event System service and the VSS service are running and check for association errors in the event logs. (0x80042318)
    Saturday, September 22, 2012 12:20 AM
  • OK - I'm not totally surprised by that.

please carry on anyhow, we can try and deal with the VSS problem later.

  • OK... I didn't get very far though, I don't have {565783C6-CB41-11D1-8B02-00600806D9B6} at HKCR\TypeLib
    Saturday, September 22, 2012 3:01 AM
  • OK - please apply the rest of the fix - hopefully it will rebuild the Key

Before running the MGADiag report at the end, please run the following command

    REG QUERY HKCR\TypeLib\{565783C6-CB41-11D1-8B02-00600806D9B6}

    and post the results

  • YAY!!!

You are now officially genuine :)

Please run the following command and post the results.

    REG QUERY HKCR\TypeLib\{565783C6-CB41-11D1-8B02-00600806D9B6}

....and then you can give yourself a pat on the back.

Thanks VERY much for staying the course - I've learned a few useful things along the way, and hopefully you have, also?

I'd love to know what removed the original entry in the first place, but it's probably lost in the mists of time by now :(

    Good luck!

yaaaay!!!! thank you so much, I learned quite a few things too.

Regarding that last VSS problem, should I do anything?

    Sunday, September 23, 2012 4:52 PM
  • Thanks for that - interesting Key, as it doesn't contain as much information as my 'standard' one but works all the same.

I'll put that to the MS guys and see what they have to say.

As regards VSS, it's really outside my area of expertise - and it may even have solved itself now?

let's have another look at the offending data.....

I think you could cope with the sort of answer you'd get in the ITPro forums, if you have access -

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/threads

If not, then use the Answers forums.

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system

    Good luck!

  • OK, I'll give it a try ;)

Thank you very, very much for your help, you were great!

  • ...as were you!

It's not often I get someone with the background and the willingness to stick with a thread this long, and allow such an in-depth look - and at the same time get the occasional clue to the next step in the fix.

The record for a successful thread here is around the 100-mark - this one seems to have come out at 84, so - 'close but no cigar' :)

Thanks again - and good luck with the VSS problem (I'll probably see it and follow it - it's something I'd like to know more about anyhow!)
