Vista Ultimate (64bit) Activation.... RRS feed

  • Question

  • Just updated the drivers for my RAID (Intel Storage Matrix) and now Windows tells me I have to re-activate.

It tells me my product key is already in use (obviously - it was used to install this system), and tells me I need a new one, giving me the option to purchase one online (not likely, I already paid for this one...) or to enter another key (which I don't have)... (it also has options to use an automated phone activation system - which will no doubt also tell me that my key is already in use; and an option to contact MS (for a cost))

How can I resolve this problem?

  • You are in what is known as out of tolerance mode and it happens when you change major components in a computer (especially OEM computers).  You need to activate by telephone and here's how to do it:

Click on start and type this in the search box: slui.exe 4
and then press Enter.  Should take about 5 min or so.  Just explain to the rep your situation and they'll get you up and running.

Updating hardware drivers is not a simple software change. Often times hardware drivers change IRQ settings, etc, which change the way hardware behaves.

  • I think the origonal poster is referring to a software change, which should NOT result in the machine becoming deactivated.  I mean, come on - that's nonsense.  Why should I have to explain to a Microsoft agent why I changed a driver so that I can continue to use the product I paid for?  I've just run into this too (on 32-bit Vista), and I'm not happy about it.

    Phil,

Activation is meant to prevent people from installing the same copy of Windows on multiple machines, yes?  If changing a single driver is sufficient for the activation algorithm to think that I've somehow cloned my entire system (complete with all my apps, data, and whatever else) and now have it running on another machine, then that algorithm is badly designed.  Yes, I understand that the new driver is reporting the drive serial numbers in a different way and that's causing activation to think something has changed, but perhaps the algorithm should consider more than just that single factor before deciding that the machine which I've been using quite happily for the last 3 months is now running an illegal copy of Windows and that I need to waste a bunch of time on the phone punching in numbers.

Activation exists purely for Microsoft's benefit: it does nothing for the user.  Activating once at installation time is fine: making me go through this BS on the phone when I change a driver is completely unacceptable.  You want a non-feature like activation in the product, you make damn sure it doesn't annoy the customer.  And don't go blaming Intel for what they did in the driver: sure, they shouldn't have changed the format of the serial number, but Vista should be flexible enough to tolerate that.  I know how easy it is to point the finger at some ISV or IHV but the product is called "Microsoft Windows Vista" for a reason.

Its not a bug. It is by design.

Well, I've now tried to post a link to a related article twice.  First my post was edited by Phil to remove the link, and my follow-up post which included the link was then deleted by him.  So, for anyone interested in reading another perspective on this, I highly recommend reading Ed Botts' blog.  If you read his post from 7/26 at 2:54pm you'll find a very relevant article.

SFish. Thank you for following with the forum terms of use requirements. The previous post was edited/removed as we generally do not allow crosslinking to non-Microsoft websites for various reasons.

When posts are removed, a "Reason" email is sent to the registered e-mail address explaining why.

    Thanks,

  • It is there in place to prevent someone from using their computer to install Windows Vista on hard drives then transfering the Hard Drive to another computer.  In order for the SPP to moniter Hardware behavior, it has to keep the drivers in check.

  • Sure, that makes sense.  What doesn't make sense is the idea that a user would take a machine, install Vista on it, use it for a while, install apps, patches, driver updates and so on, and then somehow clone that entire installation and then try to use it on a machine which is completely and utterly identical, down to the serial numbers on every component you can get them for except the HDDs.  And all this for a "feature" which is nothing but a nuisance to legitimate users.

But I guess if you guys really want to annoy the people who give you money, go ahead.

While we definitely encourage open discussion here on the Genuine Advantage forums. Unfortunately I must move this post to the "Feedback and Comments" section as this is no longer a troubleshooting issue for Windows Vista.

  • I seem to remember having found a place where you can buy licenses for Vista, but I cannot remember where it was. I am trying to find it again, but I am not having any success. I am interested at looking at the cost of buying a license for Vista Ultimate x64.
