Unable to run Genuine Windows Diagnostic- Blank screen with "not Genuine" message after cloning HD RRS feed

  • Question

  • This morning I cloned my operating system from an Intel SSD to a Seagate HD because the SSD is running out of free space.

After making boot priority changes in the BIOS the startup was normal. I re-labeled disks, deleted the system info on the SSD and rebooted. At the last boot stage, the desktop did not appear. Instead there is a pale blue screen with the message in the lower right corner stating that this windows is not genuine.

This Windows Ultimate has been on this PC for a year or so and certified as genuine. It was re-certified as genuine several months ago when I changed some hardware. Has the cloning caused the problem? I cannot use the SSD to boot now because everything worked long enough for me to make the changes to it.

Is there any way to check this out? I have tried Safe Mode: get a black screen/mouse pointer/ "safe mode" in the corners.

If it is really not a genuine Win 7 Ultimate, I will cheerfully buy a genuine copy but this is too coincidental.

Also, there should  be some way to enter a new key. As it is now, I will be forced to reinstall Windows.

Sorry this is so long but I want to be reasonable certain that my problem is explained.

  • Well, the bad news is in. I ran the diagnostic and saw the 067 entry in product id. I assume it is only a matter of time before the critical updates get to the one that caught it. I just ordered a full install of Ultimate from Amazon and will make things completely legal on Tuesday.

eBay lost a lot of points with me this week. It is for sure I will not buy any more software from there.

  • You may be able to do a repair upgrade and avoid a reinstallation.

First of all help us help you.  What is the make and model of your computer? Please confirm that the copy of Ultimate is a retail boxed copy.  That matters because you need a Windows dvd to do some type of repairs.

  • The PC is one I assembled. It has an ASUS P7P55D Pro MB, Intel core i5 LGA1157 CPU (2.6MHz I think), 8 gigs Corsair Dominator DDR3 RAM, and a Radeon Sapphire 5970 video card. Until today the primary drive was an Intel 160gb SSD and I used a Western Digital 500gb drive for most programs.I cloned the SSD over to a Seagate and planned to use the SSD for Flight Simulator X and keep the  Western Digital for back-ups. All the components except the Seagate have been in this PC since I assembled it (oops, the radeon was installed in December)

I have a retail disk and have already tried to repair windows. That didn't work so I tried System Restore on three different restore points. They all got to the final stage before aborting with an error message (I will try it again later and post the message).

I appreciate your help. I am out of ideas and tired as well. It took hours to rearrange things to make room for a monster sized heatsink and then get into those tight places to finish things up.

Why, oh why, didn't I leave things alone......... Nah, it will eventually work out.

    Thanks again

  • Reduce the memory to 2 or 4 GB until you get the OS right.  Run hard disk diagnostics from the hdd mfg.  If you have a boot time virus protector set in the BIOS (this does exist on some systems) turn it off.  Disconnect the data drive for now.

  • Thanks again for the responses to my problem. I tried all suggestions several times. The hard drive checks out using Seagate's Sea Tools. The other drives were disconnected, safe mode was tried, all without success and leading tp anice shade of blue screen with the Not genuine message.

It finally occurred to me that the quickest solution would be a reinstall of Windows and the software. After 20-30 minutes Windows 7 Ultimate was reinstalled and, as expected, it was activated and declared Genuine. Now I will get busy reinstalling all the lost software.

Best run an MGADiag report, just in case :)
To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

  • Will get it done later today or tomorrow. I want to be absolutely certain. It is toobad that there was no way to enter a new product key. I would have bought one just  to void all this reinstall.

    Best regards.

Sorry about that - but at least you know, now.
Here's my standard spiel on your situation...
Unfortunately, your Key is from a not-for-resale MSDN account. You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key, and do NOT allow them to waste time with an RMA (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window. or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.
