Multiple Windows

Question

I use 2 monitors, my laptop and an extra monitor. I want to have 2 separate instances of MS Project (2010) open, one in each monitor, so I can view both together. I've been unable to achieve this. Anyone know how?

It is not possible to open multiple windows in Microsoft Project and then to display one of the windows on an extended Windows desktop, which is what I infer you to mean when you say, "move one of the project to a different screen." This is not possible in any version of Microsoft Project, so even though you want (or need) to do this, you cannot. Sorry, but I hope this helps.

Hi Nikau,
open your two projects, go to Window - New Window .... Select a project plan and click OK. All open project plans will now be displayed seperately, the selected one is opend twice. Close one of them and you should be fine.
Does that help?

Hi Barbara,
I am having the same issue: open two projects in MSProject 2010 each one in it's own windows and able to move one of the project to a different screen. Ufortunately the solution you're providing does not work: it will merely duplicate the project in THE SAME Project window - you'll end up having one Project Instance with three sub windows (go to View->Window->Arrange All and you'll see all there).
The solution we look for is to have two separate Project instances, with windows that we can tile at the Windows Desktop level.
Looking forward to your response.

Here's how
To display two separate projects at once when you have two monitors perform the following steps:
1. Open both projects.
2. Go to Window and select “Arrange all”.
3. Both projects will now show up in the window stacked vertically.
4. Grab the right hand side of the window and expand it onto the right hand monitor.
5. Select whichever project you want on the right side and drag it onto the other monitor.
6. Resize your projects as desired.

I agree that this is a frustrating problem, and can't understand why they don't code this to work in Project, as it does work in the rest of the office suite.
No matter, what I do is run a VMWare instance of an OS in unity mode (the integrated Virtual PC for Windows 7 would work as well) and run the second instance in that OS window. It provides you with the ability to display two plans on multiple monitors, but the initial setup is a pain if you don't already have the integrated Virtual PC option working.

I think Dale has the correct answer here from a Microsoft perspective. Everyone saying go to the "window" selection on project either don't understand the question or have never tried this. I regularly work on two or more monitors and leverage them for things like this all the time.
For me, I resolved this issue by purchasing a 3rd party tool call Project Viewer from http://www.projectviewercentral.com. It seems to work with all versions up to 2010. It seems to be pretty intuitive and works similar to Project, but you cannot do anything but view the project in various views that are similar to MS Project. The site says the normal cost is $10 right now, but the normal cost is $20 per PC. If you need to update both projects I think you are probably out of luck though.
Hope this helps.

Shawn,
I too have Project 2013 and was not able to open 2 separate projects on 2 separate windows. Were you able to do this? The New Window Option doesn't spawn a separate instance of Project that you can view on another monitor.

Worked great. I use 6 stacked monitors, not only can you use 2 monitors this way, You use all if they're configured properly. ThanksMonday, November 24, 2014 3:24 PM

Dale has it right, IMHO. To add to this, I believe it has to do with the application being MDI or SDI. An MDI application encloses all open documents within its main window. An MDI app is generally harder to work with using standard windows multiple window support (when plugging in a VGA cable to a projector for instance).
MS Project is MDI. Word is (depending on version) SDI. MS Word is easy to work with across multiple monitors.

Also wikipedia has articles on SDI and MDI.

Sorry, Barbara, but that did not accomplish the desired result. I tried your way and it still requires me to switch from one to the other.
The objective is this. I have Project A open at the same time I have Project B open. I want to see Project A in one window and Project B in a different window, simultaneously. I want to put the two side-by-side so I can do a "stare and compare". Doing an "Arrange All" doesn't allow me to see enough of each plan. As noted in another entry, I'd really like to see one on my laptop screen and the other on my extended monitor, to obtain suitable size and detail.
So far, I think Dale had the correct answer, in that it cannot be done. This seems like a major oversight on MS's part.

Hi Nikau check if this works:
- Open MS Project application.
- Pull it sideways to spread it across your 2 screens kept side by side. Do not maximise the window, then it'll fill into one screen only. You can keep it a little away from the side ends of the both the screens.
- Then open the 2 projects and select 'arrange all'.
- The place your proj A on left side screen and proj B on right side screen, both inside the one MS proj window which is spread across the 2 screens.
- See pic below: and an example from my 2 screens below.
- Hint: Any application can be stretched sideways to fill 2 screens (do not maximise the window).
- Hope this helps

Seems like I'm responding to this many years later, but this method does work. I followed the steps from Aruzlud, but initially did not work as I thought. What needs to be specified here is:
4. Grab the window: this means to grab the instance of the main window and stretch this window across both screens. Basically, now you have an initial instance that stretches across both screens. Now you have a huge background that you can move your multiple windows around on.
Hope this helps

YOU ARE MY HERO!!! Why in the world didn't I think of just expanding project across both screens. Such a simple solution. Thank you so much!Wednesday, March 14, 2018 2:25 PM
