I have recently purchased a laptop (Toshiba) and I thought I had the right product key. When I went to enter it in, it would not accept it. However, when I went into Word, I when to "Word Options" button, and then "about" button and found the key. This time it wouldnt let me put that number in because it had the number one in it. The two codes I have are very different. One has just numbers and the other is numbers and letters. What should my product key look like?

  • Hello Beaulieua,

It appears that you are trying to use the Product Key (found on the sticker on your computer) to activate Office. This will not work, the Product Key (found on the sticker on your computer) is only for Windows.

Office does not (usually) come standard in computers. Normally a Computer Manufacturers will include an Office trial in the computers that they sell. The trial version of Office can be used for a limited time, but to continue using it, you would need to buy a full version of Office.

If you believe that your computer was supposed to come with a full version of Office, please contact the Manufacturer of your computer for additional information.

    Thank you,

  • Thanks, but with my laptop I also purchased Windows Vista Home I think is what it is called. I am not the greatest with the technical words to call things, but I do know that it looks like this... http://www.techshout.com/images/microsoft-office-professional-2.jpg  but home edition.

    Hi Beaulieua,

So you did buy Office Home and Student 2007?  If so, the product key to Activate that Office would be inside the box that the software came in.

  • Sorry for the confusion. I only bought Home not Student and Home. I only bought the one. So I would find it in the box somewhere? I have a 25 letter and number key but it told me it was invalid. Also, I can only get the spot where  it asks you to put in the key on Access. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Onenote will come up with the product key entry spot. I may have told it I would skip doing that process too many times? How can I pull it up again?

  • Hi Beaulieua,

I think it would be best if you spoke to an expert in Office (my area of expertise is Vista and XP). I suggest going to http://support.microsoft.com click the Select a Product button, click the one that best matches the Office that you have and then click the link that says "Contact a Support Professional by Email, Online, or Phone." (it's usually in the upper right hand corner). I suggest contacting them by Phone.

I beleive that since your copy of Office is newer, you should still be within the free support time period (and they usually give free support for install issues anyways). If it does turn out that they want you to pay (and you do not want to) you can also go to the Office NewsGroup at http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx?d=1 and post your question there. They should be better able to help you with your question.

Sorry I couldn't be more help,
