Password MS Passport and Money 2005 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I’m writing from France and I have been using Money 2005 for more than 10 years and Windows 10 for 2-3 years. I have never used the Money password but the MS Passport password (email address + password) and always checking the "Work offline" box. I've never had any problems until now. I have not been able to open my file for 2 weeks because Money displays the following message:

Microsoft Money has detected that you have not closed the file perso.m12 before leaving.

Money wants to check the status of the file data. If your file is voluminous, this process may take a few minutes.

Would you like Money to perform this check now?

If you click No, you will need to open a new file Money.

Whether I click on yes or no, I always come back to the message "The email address or password is incorrect. Please try again."

I'm sure I haven't changed anything. I tried to open my Money backup file, same message "incorrect address or password..." or, if I’m disconnected from the Internet “Your login information could not be verified. Log in online and enter them again.”  What can I do to recover 10 years of accounting?

Before writing to you I looked for solutions on the Internet and on the help of the French community, I found nothing. I also uninstalled and reinstalled Money and an update - Money2005-FR-QFE.exe.exe. I tried to open my file while being disconnected from the Internet. Nothing again.

There must be a way to override that password. I can't believe it all ends there...

    Thank you for your help.

  • Do you have older back-ups you could try?  Perhaps on a USB drive.  Or do have a recent system back-up from which you could extract a previous perso.m12.mny file,? If so make copies of these files before trying to use them.  You don't want them copied over by a non-working file..

  • Good news after all. I still haven't been able to open my corrupted files but I called my bank to find out the list of software with which I could download their statements, beside of Money. A consultant informed me that with a simple click on the "archived transactions", this service allows me to download my bank transactions for the last two years. 6 euros per account. At least I wouldn't have to manually record each operation. I will have to check everything, put back the categories but what a time saved! Thank you very much to all of you. I will keep the address of this forum carefully. And of course make backup more often.... Warm regards from the southwest of France!

  • Did you download the Money installation file from this link?

    https://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/479281b2-90f9-42ca-85f7-644fc6e1e5c3/download-microsoft-money-installation-files-solve-activation-and-some-other-errors?forum=money

If not, I suggest that you uninstall Money and re-install using the link for Money 2005 French QFE3 in that post.

I don't find any posts discussing an error message about perso.m12.  Maybe another forum member will have some ideas.

  • I had already done it but to be sure I just did it again (uninstall Money and reinstall it from the link in this post). It still doesn't work.
perso.m12.mny : perso is the name of my Money file followed by 2 extensions.

  • ???? It worked!!!! Incredible!!!! I was able to open my Money file as well as my back-up file. But they are from April 2017... Thank you very much Bob. At least I'm sure that my Passport password was right. Any idea on how to open my October 2018 file? I tried again right now but Money still display the same message.

  • It may be that your more recent perso.m12.mny is damaged.  Most versions of Money have file repair program called salv.exe.  I don't know if it's included in Money 2005 French QFE3, but if it is, try running it on your perso.m12.mny file.

Salve.exe will be in your MNYCoreFiles folder.  That folder is typically in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money folder.  If you can't find it with File Explorer, you may need to go to View>Options>View, check "Show hidden files, folders and drives", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

Be sure to follow bobjbkin's advice about keeping copies of your current files in a safe location while doing any experiments.  And consider routinely doing more that one backup of your Money file.  Review the backup options in Money 2005 French QFE3  to see how you might do this.  In addition you might want to copy your perso.m12.mny file to a separate drive or media whenever you make a significant number of entries in Money.  You can manually delete the older backups when you are sure that they won't be needed.

  • About keeping copies of my files, I saved them on my hard disk, external hard drive and USB key. Thank for reminding me.

I tryed to repair My Money file with your technic above, salv.exe. At the end of the process, there is a message saying:

"The repair utility failed to recover your file. Repair a different version of your file, restore a backup file or reinstall Money. Also make sure that your file is not saved as read-only."

But the repaired file is created, with the same size as the original file. When I try to open it, it says again:

"Microsoft Money has detected that you have not closed the file repaired2018 (name of my repaired Money file) before leaving.

Money wants to check the status of the file data. If your file is voluminous, this process may take a few minutes.

Would you like Money to perform this check now?

If you click No, you will need to open a new Money file."

Whether I click on yes or no, I get the message "The email address or password is incorrect. Please try again."

Is there another way to repair the file?

  • Another possibility.  If you right-click on your perso.m12.mny file, do you see anything in the Previous Versions tab?  If so, you may be able to access one of those.  Proceed carefully so that you don't accidentally overwrite a good file.  There is an extensive discussion on how to do this here:

  • I checked all the Previous Versions Tabs, even after an hour, they are all empty.

  • I just tried the demo of OfficeRecovery for Money. Result: "Sorry, no recoverable data has been detected."

  • Another possibility that I should have mentioned earlier is that you may have some backup files that are more recent.  Try using Windows search for *.mbf on each of your drives.  If you find a file with a recent date, you can restore it by opening it with Money.  If there is more than one of these, when you do the restore be sure to save the restored files with different names so that you can keep track of things.

If Windows search doesn't find anything, Agent Ransack has been recommended on this forum as a good tool for thoroughly searching in Windows.  It's free for personal use:

  • Hello, I just used Windows Search and then Agent Ransack on my internal and external hard disks. It didn't find anything between April 2017 and October 2018. If I don't succeed in opening the 2018 file, I will have to enter manually one year and a half of accounting for several accounts... Knowing that I can only download the transactions of the last two months from my bank. Pfff! Another suggestion?

  • Sorry, I'm out of ideas.  Maybe another forum participant will have some thoughts.  I guess I don't have to tell you that you should start doing backups more often.

  • I am sorry that you lost such a long period, but it could be worse I think.

You can use this as a motivation to review your backup procedures. A good procedure will have multiple vintages of backup, and back up to other media. If you keep a single backup file upon exit, a corruption could occur, and the good backup could be overwritten.

You could have a batch file that does something like this:

    delete backup 5
rename backup 4 to backup 5
rename backup 3 to backup 4
rename backup 2 to backup 3
rename backup 1 to backup 2
copy upon-exit backup  to backup 1

You could run that batch file every 2 weeks, or you could have the Windows Scheduler do it for you.

Also consider what would happen if you had a disk failure or worse. Keep some backups off-site or in the cloud.
