After 3 years with no problem, I am suddenly getting a message that my Windows 7 Home premium is not a valid copy. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Yesterday I started getting notifications that my windows 7 home premium is not a valid copy.  When I go to the computer properties, it says Windows is activated.  I tried doing an online chat with a tech, but he told me that the OEM license is locked and that I needed to buy a copy of windows 8.  He also used poor grammar and spelling so I wonder about that.  I can't read the sticker on the bottom of my laptop, part of it's been worn away.  I appreciate any help.  Here is the diagnostic file:

  • As expected...

    I've uploaded a file - sluicom64.zip - to my OneDrive at  Noel's OneDrive

Please download and save it to your desktop.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...

Save it to the default location

This should create a file sluicom64.reg

right-click on the file, and select Merge

Accept the warnings, - you should then get a 'Success' message.

    Close all windows, and reboot.

Run another MGADiag report, and post the results.

To confirm that the problem is what I think it is, please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt window and post the results.

    REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\TypeLib\{EE574957-4077-4AD6-8658-327C2C86C5AA} /S

    REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib\{EE574957-4077-4AD6-8658-327C2C86C5AA} /S

    REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\TypeLib\{EE574957-4077-4AD6-8658-327C2C86C5AA} /S

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

  • Thank you.  This seems to have worked.  I did not get the message when I rebooted.  Can you tell me if I did something to cause this or if there is anything I can do t avoid it in the future?

  • The most common cause of this problem is use of registry 'cleaners' (AKA Destroyers) - you should uninstall any such program.

The new MGADiag report looks good to me - with any luck it'll stay that way.

You should check it by validating at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate using Internet Explorer - it should pass, and clear the remaining minor error from the report.

    Good Luck!

  • No registry cleaners, someone warned me away from them years ago.  I use Spybot Search and Destroy for spyware protection and McAfee for antivirus.  Ran the validation link and everything looks great.  Thank you very much.  Pretty bad when a volunteer good samaritan knows more about the software than a tech employed by Microsoft.

  • All too common for MGA problems - MS techs have to get to level 3 before they are trained in MGADiag.
